Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Byron Gates, cheers, thats great info thanks, we may DIY this trip, do you know a good transfer service to Salzburg (taxi or bus)?

FSI, its worth considering the train - trolleybus into town from Salzburg airport takes about 20 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof, then onto an express train either direct to Zell in 1:38 or 2:10 with a change in Schwarzach (see http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp for details).

I've driven it in a hire car for a long weekend, and it took me 2 hours from arrivals to Zell (about 1:30 on the road plus the time to get the car), which is about the same, with the difference that the hire car or a taxi are expensive, and the train is €18.20 each way. The cheapest coach seats are about €35 each way, and it takes longer, or if you have 7/8 people, you can get a private minibus for about €120 each way, which works out cheaper.

See http://www.zellamsee-kaprun.com/en/winter/services/flight_transfer.html for some details of companies who can help.

Paul.

ousekjarr, Byron Gates, I think the 'holiday shuttle' looks ideal in terms of simplicity and cost, although I suspect I'll quickly lose any profit made in that new casino..... many thanks for the help and info snowHead

stayed there a couple of years back. Fairly small hotel decent food nice small bar friendly woman owner and great location in centre. Accomodation decent without being plush. Security was a concern though as anyone could get into the hotel and access bedrooms if doors were left open. One couple had belongings go missing, but don't let that put you off. Lebzelter is similarly priced bigger and slightly better imo.

FSI, centre of Zell can be really noisy late into the night (which is OK unless you or your kids are trying to sleep) and you are a bit of a yomp to the lifts. In my view you'd be better off up near the lifts (try somewhere like the Berner Hotel). It's then a shortish walk down into town after dinner for some more fun and a sobering walk back up. Fischerwirt does good fisch.

Stayed in the Hotel Stadt Wein a couple of years ago and really loved it. It is a medium sized family run 4 star hotel with a nice spa and very good food including nice afternoon snacks if you are on half board. The hotel is three or four minutes walk from the main lift/ski hire shop/depot which in turn is a further five minute walk to the center of the pedestrianised area. All in all a really nice resort. Got private lessons every day from the main ski school office at the lifts. Loads of instructors with a good range of languages.

This list shows the various hotels in Zell Am See and grades them based on customer feedback. Have a look down through it.

Many thanks one and all, have so far tried the Fischerwirt, Berner, Stadtwien, Lebzelter and Romantikhotel - all booked up for the dates we want 29/12 - 5/01. We stayed in Soll two years ago for new year and had no problems with accommodation - guess it says a lot about the resorts!

BarryOS, Was already working off the trip advisor list and found it very useful. Guess I'm just going to have to chuck some more money at it for a higher spec hotel, look a little outside the centre or take one of the options we have in Kitzbuhel (poorer hotel and more expensive). [strop]and I so wanted to go to Zell [/strop]

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Very Happy

Dont give up yet. There is a lot of good accomodation in Zell.

The Hotel Georg is accross the road from the Stadt Wein. Slightly bigger and older but seems to get good reviews. Location is excellent.

Well in that case, there's always the Grand Hotel wink - http://www.grandhotel-zellamsee.at/Grand-Accommodation.14.0.html?&L=1

Right on the lake, high spec, not too far from the centre, not quite so close to the lifts, and a short stagger from Crazy Daisy's if that's your sort of thing. No idea whether they have free rooms - their online booking system doesn't allow reservations for busy periods for some reason.

kevducky,
Driven through it but not stayed. pleasant little low altitude resort. Local skiing is on a small scale and low altitude, I have not tried it. Just up the road with I think a ski bus is Zauchensee which is higher and is a very enjoyable area. In the other directionis all the rest of Ski Amade.

i have stayed in kaprun and skied zell which is quite a nice ski area, with lots of tree lined runs. Also the bus to maiskogel takes about 10 mins and then there is always the kitzsteinhorn glacier which would be 25 mins away.

I stayed in karun last year. The skiing is a bit limited so we tended to go over to Zell. took about 10 mins from kaprun centre. Buses tended tto be packed during rush hour. We wanted to stay in Zell this new year but like yourself can't get acomodation
