Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi Guys,
I'm off to Big Bear mountain (www.bearmtn.com) in California next March - has anyone been???
I'm interested in how cold it'll be, snow etc. so that I can get the appropriate gear.
Nay help comments welcome as I've never skied in the US before

I can't offer any help I'm afraid, but I'm sure others can. I assume that your not the same Richard Simpson that meets my daughter off the school bus everyday?

I am a resident of Southern California and have skied there many times. There are actually three resorts in the area - Snow Summit and Snow Valley and another one that I don't know the name of because it has changed in the past few years. All are good, none are huge, and they make a lot of snow from the lake water. One resort caters toward the skiers, and another towards the boarder, and the other probably both.
Discounted lift tickets are usually available through several sources. Contact me off list for more info.
I would recommend renting a car in LA and driving up the hill. Chains are usually not required as the roads are quickly cleared unless it is snowing.
March should be a terrific time to go there. It won't be that cold...probably in the 20's F.
Ski rental facilities are everywhere, so if you're renting, then you'll have no problem. You can probably pick up a good deal on some end of year equipment if you're in the mood to buy.

Thanks for the info - glad its not going to be too cold
. We are going to fly to LA the week before and spend some time in the area. I was debating whether or not to rent a 4WD for the trip to the mountains or something more standard....sounds like a 4WD is not strictly necessary?
I'm quite interested in finding out about discounted lift tickets - I'll drop you a mail off list.
