Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Has any one had any experience of the 'slopes' in the North of England? Places such as Swinhope and the Raise etc?

Opinions please

Konrad, I've added a little bit of info in reply to your questions over on winterhighland.com

If we get skiable snow in the Pennines or the Lake District this year, I'll try to up date things here as well.

Am I wrong in believing that Yad Moss is the popular ones of the lot?

I was once walking up Helvellyn in the winter in the mist somewhere near the top I heard a strange chug chuging sound, you guessed it, a ski tow!

I went to Swinhope on the 24th of January this year, it was a great day out.
Cost me £15, which is less than an hour in a snowdome.
There is a youth hostel in Alston
http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/northumberland-north-pennines/hostels/alston/index.aspx
which isn't to far from Swinhope http://www.skiweardale.co.uk/
or Yad Moss http://www.thepriceofcheese.com/, if you are coming from afar.
Raise in the lake district is for members only, details here

Check out for snow on http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Yad-Moss

Been to Yad Moss on quite a few occasions in the last 5-6 years.
It can be good but I think that you have to approach it with the right attitude – if it’s good it’s just hell of a bonus to get a days snowsport in England. If it’s mediocre and the hardworking team are shovelling snow onto the peat just enjoy it for what it is – better than not ski-ing at all.
Only one hassle – the lift track can be very bumpy with drifts. Not dared try it on a board yet.

JanA, I notice you're in the Dales. Are you in the north or south ? If in the north, could possibly share a lift up to YM sometime ?

Peter S, I am ski ing early this season (6th Jan for a week in France) so hope that there may be a day or two near me this year. I would hate to have the gear put away for the rest of the season in mid Jan!

Looking at the websites it doesn't look like any of these places hire skis, can anyone confirm this is the case ?
and if so, is there anywhere near to them that do ?
I'll be quite near to Alston over xmas/new year and in the event there's any snow, would love to check some of them out but would need skis... Very Happy

One day, I really should get to ski at Swinhope, given that my brother lives in St John's Chapel. But we never seem to get up there when there is snow.

Right down in the south - actually just out of the national park near Ingleton. No probs with a lift but it might be easier to co-ordinate with someone closer by.

There used to be a rope ski tow in a field at the head of Chapel-le-Dale (north of Ingleton) but I haven't seen it there for a couple of years. Was just a pay-the-farmer a fiver sort of thing but perhaps he's been warned off by the slippers & trippers sue 'em brigade.
