OK, we test skis a fair bit and i have to say it's very subjective. I can't see me being able to get the same information or the information i need indoors or on plastic. I appreciate the symetric possiblities, but can only see you being able to chose the type of ski you need this way, ie, Fat, Piste, Freestyle, Intermediate, Beginner etc. I have tested skis at MK when i worked in the UK but couldn't build up enough speed to find the skis limitations.
Can open, worms all over the floor.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, hooray - agreed - and I have just said the same on another thread. How much can you really assess a fast or a fat ski on a layer of lemon sorbet?

Quite true..pretty well useless to all intents and purposes. You can just about feel whether it is the type of ski you like on your feet...and whether you would be interested in trying it further...but that is all.

Agreed. It takes me at least half a day on a mountain to get a good feel for a ski. For me testing in a snowdome or on plastic does not allow me to come to a sensible view on whether I like it or not. Maybe I just don't have very sensitive feet...?

Course its not ideal but its better than taking the advice of some spotty saffer who's a skiing expert on the basis of 1/2 a day training at S+R. We don't all live in a ski town and have access to a bottomless demo fleet with manufacturers falling over themselves to give us new kit to assess, unfortunately

It's better than putting your foot at the tail of the ski, holding the tip, and bending it with your hand.
But if you want to test a fat ski, then anything under 50cm of deep, fresh, champagne powder is for losers (hey, if whitegold can say it, why can't I?)

I have concluded that I don't like particular skis from using them in the snowdome but not the other way round. That said, the last 3 pairs of skis I have bought without trying beforehand and have been pretty happy with 2 and haven't yet skied the other

Agree, however testing indoors or dry slope has helped me to narrow the choice down a little, before then testing in real conditions, allowing more time to be spent on the ski's that feel better.

Wear The Fox Hat, 50cm and deep should not be in the same sentence. I mean, really.

I enjoyed the 's ski test at Braehead, it is about the only chance I will ever get to compare different skis, I can't deny though that I have no idea how to extrapolate anything from there to 'real snow'.

I tried testing skis at MK last season. Waste of time, like test driving a car up and down your driveway.

I could tell pretty much within 1 run at MK if I liked a ski or not. If I didn't like it I could tell instantly, if it felt good a few more runs were needed to tell it's good and bad points. Sure Big Mountain skis, you're not going to get the full picture, but it's better than just reading about them.

The only pair of skis that I have tried in a snowdome this year were some '08 Nordica GSRs. I couldn't get them anywhere near fast enough to work well.
