Poster: A snowHead

Has anyone bought a jacket mail order from the US. Some great offers on in some online stores but i'm worried about the amount i'd have to pay in customs. Anyone any experience? They likely to charge £30? £100? Nothing at all?
If the total cost is going to end up the same as i'd pay here or more i've wasted my time, money and waited an extra few weeks.

garethjomo, I've just bought one and I think I got stiffed for 17.5% VAT and about 20% duty. It was still cheapish but it took the shine off the deal and I probably wouldnt bother again.

I believe there are a number of US based ebay.co.uk sellers who (without asking) seem to label goods at a lower price than you've paid, and mark it as a 'gift'. In such cases Her Majesty's Customs tend to let it through. However, as others have pointed out you should be prepared to pay both VAT and import duties.

Of stuff I've bought (at least 4 packages this season) it's all not been picked up by customs. With the week dollar I've managed to pick stuff up at about 50% of the UK price.
(for benefit of the tape - am not advocating any form of tax evasion)

A group of us clubbed together and ordered masses of Smartwool socks as they were seconds and quite cheap.
The box turned up yesterday. But before I was given the box I was told to cough up £46.53 in taxes.
Our order was $255.10 = £121.22.
Our delivery charge was $45.00.
Total bill was $300.10 = £142.60.
Looking at the paperwork today, it looks like the customs and excise bill has been based on the $300.10 (socks and delivery) and not just the $255.10 (just the sock order). Will have to double check when I get a moment.
Socks were still very cheap, but as mentioned above, it leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth.

VAT should be payable on eventhing imported unless it's a gift. Duty on wintersports hard goods at approx 3% and clothing is approx 12% so if you buy from the US expect to pay VAT and Duty. Not all couriers pick up on it if the shipment is under £250 but you should always work the duty and VAT and handling into what you buy so you don't surprise at the end.
PS if you want a GIFT sent, get a friend to send it via normal air post.

I got a dividend from REI which amounted to about £50. I ordered a "free" acrtrex top. i had to top up the cash by £20, so far so good.
When it arrived I had to pay Vat, duty and a £20 PO collection fee, all in all my free top came to about £60 and didnt fit.
