Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

World cup races at Levi cancelled due to lack of snow

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Despite temperatures dropping enough at Levi (Finland) to allow the resort management to start making snow over the weekend, the Alpine skiing World Cup competition has been cancelled due to the weather. The men’s and women's slalom — scheduled for next weekend — have been cancelled because of poor snow conditions and unfavorable forecasts, the FIS announced yesterday.
...Levi is situated above the Arctic Circle, but unusually warm temperatures and lack of snow have prevented the organising committee to properly prepare the course so far.

Ironically, Levi opened the 2007 World Cup season after the cancellation of the Opening at Soelden in October 2006, but this year the conditions have not been as favorable so far. Normally, it's possible to ski in Levi in early November with temperatures as low as -25°C at times.

The Ladies' and Men's SL cancelled in Levi have been rescheduled in Reiteralm (Austria) with the following schedule:
Saturday, 10.11.2007 - Ladies' SL at 10:00 / 13:00 CET
Sunday, 11.11.2007 - Men's SL at 10:00 / 13:00 CET

A "bit low" for what? If it's got more snow than Val Thorens at 3000m what's the problem????

Plenty of snow in Austria at the moment though snowHead

Altitude isn't everything though, especially in Scandinavia, because the further north you go the less altitude you need for decent snow, most Scandinavian resorts are far lower than the Alps but their location in the far north makes up for the lack of altitude. I'd guess Levi must be having a bad start to the season despite it's latitude but the snow should come - it's always a bit of a lottery before Xmas/early January.

There's an equation you can use, but I forget exactly what it is unfortunately, it goes something like for every 100 miles north you go the snow/freezing level drops by so many metres or something... Toofy Grin

This is why the plateau at the top of Cairngorm (1245 metres) in Scotland is classified as sub-arctic tundra, IIRC the only one this far south of the Arctic circle, with extreme weather likely year round and the ground only a few metres down frozen year round with permafrost. I heard they had a hell of a job putting in the new Ptarmigan restaurant a few years back at 1097 metres as a result of hitting permafrost as they dug the foundations. The same, but with more extreme cold and more snow is likely in Scandinavia I'd guess.

It is warm today. But tomorrow will be much colder. The outlook has improved.

It looks like most of Austria will get 5 - 30cm of freshies above roughly 1500 meters between Tues and Sun this week.

Lech, in Western Austria, could get up to a half-meter in the next few days.
