Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Have to ski early this year due to work commitments - second week in January

I am considering Risoul /Vars, but know very little about the area - can anone give me any idea on snow reliability and suitability for relatively high mileage good intermediate skiers?

Thanks in advance

I worked the seaosn in Vars about seven years ago (my what an old git I am). The best skiing is at the Vars end (higher), but it was all fun and none of us got bored with it over six months.

afcbtim, hubby and son went for a day to meet friends last New Year. Snow was OK, but better in Serre Chevalier at the time. They enjoyed their day though.

Hi there,

We've had about 3 trips to Risoul over the years, and have always had a great time. It's not my favourite place from a resort point of view (but then France isn't for me in general wink !), but the skiing has always been great.

We do lots of high mileage cruising and there is plenty of scope, as long as the link to Vars is open. It's sometimes closed for a few days after heavy snow, which is annoying, and the resort is noticeably cr@p (in my opinion, natch) at getting things up and running after a heavy fall.
But all in all, plenty of scope. Also loads of off-piste, or rather, between the piste, skiing for those who want a bit more variety. On the Risoul side everything pretty much ends up back at the 'front de neige' and lift stations, so you can venture into the wooded areas and know where you're going to end up.

Snow is usually pretty good, it's very sunny there in the southern alps so it does deteriorate more in the afternoons than some other places, but we've always had plenty of the white stuff.

Main downsides for me were the resort is quite quiet and small (but is getting better) and there are hardly any mountain restaurants, but then I come from the jolly Austrian school of ski holidays so can't compare it to other French resorts.

We have been a few times for a very cheap holiday (friend has a pad there), probably wouldn't go back a 4th time, but enjoyed a couple of weeks there, and having said that, if we found ourselves in March with cash and holiday to spare, we might struggle to say no!

I have done a resort report on risoul I think so go have a read and let me know if you have any more questions.

Happy sliding snowHead
D
