Poster: A snowHead
|
This week, heavy snowfalls have been predicted in the mountains of Eastern and South Eastern Europe (e.g. the Austrian Alps, the Balkans, the Carpathians and even the Pindos Mountains of Greece), as a low pressure forms over the Balkans. While not much snow is expected in France or western Switzerland this week, weather models are hinting that there will be heavy snow over the French Alps and Pyrenees in nine or ten days time....The first significant snows of autumn have already fallen in Colorado. For example, the snow pack at Roaring Fork basin (Aspen) is 67 percent above average for this time of year, according to data tracked by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The old folk of the mountains have assured me that there will be good snow this winter in Les Gets for three very clear reasons:
1) The onions have thick skins this year
2) It looks like all the leaves will be off the trees before the fist snowfall - a VERY good sign
3) The mice are starting to head indoors early
There was something else about genepi flowers, but that sounded a bit dodgy when stacked up against the kind of science applied to the other theories...

ctskifam, all the mice or only the brown left handed ones with unusually long tails. They're the real weather predicting mice (it's an ancient mouse charter or something). However, if it's actually the rats who can determine between japanese or russian spoken backwards, the you're in for an ig-nobel prize - maybe.

I thought it had already snowed in Les Gets. Wasn't there a sprinkle a couple of weeks back?

jayc, first snowfall down to the village. I think the science behind the theory allows flexibility in the interpretation.
