Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

David Goldsmith, so no proof, just your word, which doesn't count for much.

Still waiting for you to explain why you didn't report the other view of how the repping service is cost effective. Proper unbiased reporting means you report both sides. You didn't do that in this case. So that's dishonest and biased reporting from you again.

Yes, just my word. In my experience they're more than happy to speak to any member of a client organisation such as the SCGB. Give them a call.

They might feel most comfortable in knowing your name, so introduce yourself as 'Mr Ski'.

Are you going to accept that invitation for a drinky? It has an expiry date.

David Goldsmith, a turnout of about 5-600 out of about 25000 non children members is pretty low, but that may mean that other people are happy with the way things are - or just complacent.

How do you suggest the club forces people to vote? Puzzled

Bearing in mind the 'psychological profiling' incident, I wonder if you are reporting accurately. If the official did indeed tell you that, it seems to me a gross breach of professional conduct.

stoatsbrother, apathy is itself a vote. In my club, the typical turnnout for an AGM is between 20 and 25% of the membership. If the SCGB got 5-600, I would say that they had all that could reasonably be expected.

a non vote is not a vote. Turning up to obstain is a vote (although some also argue about that) but just not turning up can never be called a vote.

You can't force people to vote, except with rules or law. The membership might decline if members were forced to vote. They might leave the country and form the Ski Club of Colombia.

You can encourage people to vote, in all sorts of ways, which is a rather different concept.

Bode Swiller, call it what you will. Personally, if I were content with the status quo, I'd probably post the chairman my vote. OTOH, I might well just not bother. I certainly would not see the point in turning up to a meeting just to abstain. I am a firm believer in the democratic right not to vote at all, including for national general elections. I deplore the Australian laws requiring citizens to pitch up, so giving the politicians a false sense of mandate. At least Barrack Obama has a real knowledge of how many Americans felt they really wanted him.

achilles, in the case of SCGB I'm sure that your non vote is the same as a vote because, when the dosh involved is only a small handfull of fivers, it really doesn't matter to most people what happens. Apathy can and does rule there. But in general, not voting could be for tons of reasons... lack of transport, lack of knowledge/understanding, intimidation etc etc.

20-25% is exceptionally high for an actual physical turnout, I believe.

Although 2% is also on the low side, particularly if it includes postal votes.

There are various votes, Swiller.
Then you have the intriguing role of the 'Chairman's proxy votes', touched on by achilles.

I watched democracy in action at the last AGM of Marks & Spencer, in the auditorium of the Royal Festival Hall (as a non-shareholder, simply an evacuation specialist). About 2000 shareholders were there, plus all the posted votes etc. Live webcasting of the event to any shareholder who wanted to view proceedings. It was interesting to see Sir Stuart Rose, captured on the video monitors, biting his lip as the votes were cast on matters relating to his controversial joint role as Chairman and Chief Executive.

How would members of the SCGB vote, if they all voted?

I think if they were presented with two (or more) highly-researched and creative options for the future of the Ski Club there could be interesting results.

We had two evacuations in one night at the Roundhouse a couple of years ago. Groove Armada were playing and the place was jumping, until everyone found themselves in the carpark.

Until a couple of weeks ago we had this large inflatable igloo - 'Igloo Cinema' - in the foyer of the RFH for Christmas and New Year. There were special instructions on how to evacuate the igloo, in the event of it deflating.

The repping service in Les Arcs certainly was superb when I was there.
