What is the official (planned - snow dependant of course) opening date for Chamonix this season?
Got the chance for 3 or 4 days there mid December - too early?

Don't put too much faith in the Compagnie du Mont Blanc - last year they were selling discounted season passes and saying they would open in early December, subject to snow) right up to the end of November, when they announced they would be changing the lift cable for the Grands Montets and wouldn't open until Christmas in any event. I suspect they don't find it cost effective to open in December, even if there is snow.

GeorgeM, I think the problems were more snow and cable related than anything else...the discounted season passes were indeed on sale until the published date/
The very, very, very annoying points being
1. that Courmayeur wasn't included despite it being advertised as being so (I'm still sure there was a law suit in there somewhere)
2. that they stated clearly that they wouldn't discount for residents/gens de pays (so we didn't bother getting our cards) yet if you turned up with the appropriate documentation they gave a absolutely massive discount. Where's the logic in that then?

SMALLZOOKEEPER, Keep up the reports, just found out that a friend of mine is working in Chamonix this winter as resort manager for a small tour op, so fingers crossed we'll be popping up to say "hello, who fancies a beer then"

You don't have to be married to get the couples discount by the way - we didn't know it existed and were very confused when we were told about it by the very nice lady who was kind enough to persevere with my bad french. When we handed over our residents cards, she asked us if we were a couple, and I happened to have some notaire's documentation with us. She looked over it and just gave us the discount after giving up on the explanation. So any platonic flat-shares out there might give it a try.
