Poster: A snowHead
|
I have spent a week in Wengen, but I wondered whether anyone here has tried a skiing week from Interlaken and The Metropole hotel in particular.
Obviously, I journeyed via Interlaken at the beginning and end of the Wengen week but I don't know whether that would be tiresome on a daily basis. I believe a bus connects to Grindlewald - otherwise Lauterbrunnen and up by railway.
Is Interlaken OK on a winter evening ?
Reason for the query is holidays seem to be favourably priced.

Latchigo, Interlaken is used by some people as a base but it's not ideal, you're looking at almost an hour of travelling each morning just to get to resort level, Grindelwald by the way is easier to get to by train, get on the rear section of the same train that goes to Lauterbrunnen (sector b of the platform, usually platform 2) the train splits at Zweilutschinen.
Nightlife in Interlaken is supposed to be better (or at least there's more of it) than in the resorts. The Metropole is very nice I seem to recall that it has a rooftop restaurant which was plesant, unfortunately it's also almost exactly half way between Interlaken Ost and Interlaken West stations, a long way to walk in ski boots every day morning and evening.
On the other hand the Metropole is a 4* hotel with all the facilities, if you are getting a good deal it may well be worth while.
Whilst I remember it there is a bus covered by the whole region ski pass that goes from ( I think ) Wilderswil railway station, to the center of Interlaken from memory about 100m from the Hotel Metropole but I don't know its timetable.
My friends were very amused to find a shop just off the main street that sells a certain weed smoked by some people.
I know of a shop there that sells ski gear at good prices, go to Interlaken West station, then take the road past the level crossing and across the river, big sports shop a couple of hundred meters up the road on the left hand side, ski gear downstairs. I think they may hire stuff as well but I'm not sure of that.
If you want to know more just ask, I've been going to the area since I was born, over 30 years ago

I personally couldn't handle the train journey ever day to go skiing. It would take the fun out of skiing and spending valuable skiing time seating in a train...
How about trying another one the resorts, Murren or Grindelwald instead and if i had to decide which one........ Murren would be my choice
D G Orf, where on earth is that shop in Interlaken,i've never seen it or heard of it, not that i would be trying to find such a place.

Chris Brookes, I cant remember the name of the herbal shop, however from memory, go to the roundabout near the Loeb department store in the town center, take the side road from there heading in the direction of the Jungfrau / Murren etc, its down that road a couple of hundred yards on the left hand side, I think it may also be an internet cafe type place as well

Yes well I don't know where the vets are either, I don't smoke and wasn't about to start, but one of my friends decided to try some down by the river and got very paranoid for a little while I went to get some nice little goodies from cafe Schue (sp?) instead and met the others back at Interlaken Ost

No cakes at cafe Schue is something not to be missed if you go to Interlaken.

My parents have stayed at the Metropole...and give it a favourable report. As DG Orf said, there is a ski bus that links the metropole with Wilderswil station.
Interlaken is fine on a winter's evening, especially if you like cafe's/ strolling round shops. If your preference is a rowdy pub, then I'm not too sure where to suggest

I have stayed at a place called Sunny day in Interlaken about 2 to 3 seasons ago and drove to Junfrau resorts daily. Interlaken was a bit quiet in the evening but we enjoyed our time there. I regard a 30-60 minute car jouney to get to a resort of my choice is perfectly acceptable.

It was 18'c today, we were up on Les Joncs near Vanil Blanc in the ski station of Les Granges, te 18'c was at the bottom but we hiked up to 1500m (the summit) and there's no snow at all. The neighbouring peaks are only around 2000m but there's no snow on them at all yet.
