Poster: A snowHead

Just looking at the lovely cosmetic coverings out there now, and just started me wondering how much snowfall is needed before a resort would open a run?
I'm guessing a fair bit (a few feet??) so that it can be bashed down and not cut straight through to bare earth if someone cranks a hard turn??
Reading the loveland website they state " Loveland opens with a minimum base of 18 inches and side-to-side, top to bottom coverage"
I'd guess that is packed down to 18".....
Cheers,
Greg

all depends on the terrain? A nice prepared grassy slope probably only needs 20 - 30cms, a high altitude moonscape covered in rocks you'd probably want well over 50cm+. I remember when in fernie ("legendary powder") a few seasons back it rained all the snow away and some 2 weeks later when some snow finally arrived we're skiing probably 30cm powder on no base. Suggest big fat old not loved much any more style skis.

kitenski, numbers reported by waynos tie in with what I've been told.
boredsurfin, pah, REAL Scottish skiers can handle heather, peat bog, etc. with no need for frost

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Reckon in some of the lower resorts it is in the very low cm's?

It can be anywhere between 10cm and 200cm, depending on the terrain.
Grassy Saalbach can open some pistes with little snow.
On the other hand, rockier parts of Zermatt need well over 3 - 6 feet.
