Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Looking for a really good boot fitter in the UK

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I live in Gloucestershire but can travel.

My feet are wide, with a high top bit, my calves are quite wide too so the rental boots kill. So i need somewhere with a lot of choice, not somewhere who only cater for narrow feet and skinny legs.

I've been advised on Nordica or Tecnica boots but need to find a good bootfitter who will know just what i need.

I've seen on another thread about CEM, but i can't find their website anywhere.

Can anyone help?

Thanks! Smile

CEM is Solutions 4 Feet http://www.solutions4feet.com/ based at Bicester. I'd also recommend Profeet in London http://www.profeet.co.uk/ski_index.asp

You might like to take a look at this:

SMALLZOOKEEPER runs Footworks, a shop in Chamonix which has long specialised in fitting boots properly.
He and CEM both used to work at Lockwoods which is well renowned for its bootfitting in the UK.

So it's a chance to checkout all three at the same time and hook up with a few snowHeads for a beer into the bargain.

EKnight, there's also a discount I believe if you buy boots at the Boot Clinic. You're unlikely to find that much boot talent in the same room anywhere else in the UK Wink

Yup - get some tecninca's for sure.
I also have wide feet, and find tecnica boots fit my wide hoof's perfectly (on my 3rd set in 10 yrs).

However rumour is that the UK distributor for tecnica wont deal with the smaller ski shops.
So you may have to get them from snow & rock.

I dont think everyone needs an expert boot fitter. Tecnicas can often be heat molded (newer tecnica inners all have this feature, its really easy and takes 20 minutes). And if required maybe get some super feet for extra support of the arch.

Happy skiing

My similarly wide, short, high in-step feet would argue very strongly with that point Smile It's only with the work of a couple of good bootfitters that I've finally been able to ski all day without excessive pain.

EKnight, I second rob@rar and could not disagree more with that suggestion from Haggis_Trap. My feet are also broad across the knuckles, high instep and narrowish heel - and I only manage to get anything close to a decent fit by going to an expert bootfitter. I can thouroughly recommend CEM, although he doesn't actually sell you the boots himself (but links up with his local ski store), had a less good experience with Profeet, and there was a fantastic response from last years' Boot Clinic. Don't be concerned about what the make of boot is, the bootfitter will work out what the best shaped shell for your foot is (in my case it was the Head S-series) - and then probably have to work on it to get the fit right. Go to someone only half decent, as I had to (timing, availability) for my current boots to start with, and you'll risk end up with the boot causing lumps and bumps on your foot which makes the rectification job an order of magnitude harder.

EKnight, and Beans of Bicester are a source for boots too http://www.beansonline.co.uk/acatalog/index.html You could hire your boots in the UK and have CEM fit them for you . . . sorted

EKnight, imho if your feet are shaped more than slightly funny, you've got a history of boot problems or you have any ambition of skiing at a higher level, go see an expert boot fitter. It'll be worth it. And CEM or the sH Boot Clinic would certainly seem pretty convenient.

EKnight, yep, you go & see CEM & he'll examine your feet & tell you what make/model/shell size to go & buy. Then take 'em back to CEM for footbeds, fitting & alignment work. It's the most important bit of skiing kit you'll ever buy so it's worth getting it right first time. Many here didn't, inc myself (rolling eyes) & so speak from experience.

Isn't it better to buy them after you've had them all fitted and make sure they're right though?

If i went and bought some boots after having my feet looked at and told the size, then went back for the inners to be fitted and find out that the shell wasn't the best then i'd be out of pocket.

Is it not better to go somewhere like Lockwoods where i can get someone to look at my feet and try on the boots and inners before buying them, all at the same time?

EKnight, Solutions4Feet (which is the company of snowHead CEM) has a close relationship with Beans of Bicester. If you go to Solutions4Feet CEM will assess your feet then take you to Bean (two minutes walk around the corner) and recommend a few models for you to try. Once you have agreed the boots that are right CEM will do whatever adjustment is required, including footbeds, shell adjustments, custom liners, etc.

EKnight, CEM also sells Biofreeze, which is green goo that works wonders on aches & pains. It's so good, last time I was in Solutions4Feet, I bought 2 large containers of it, and boredsurfin tried some on his hand. It made the pain go away, then me and CEM could talk about him...

The problem with profesional boot fitters is that they are usually limited to the brands that their store sells....

And unfortuantly in the uk if you want tecninca boots (great for wide feet), then you will probably need to go looking for them specificaly.

Haggis_Trap, I don't see how that is a massive problem....

Surely un-professional bootfitters are also limited to what their store sells...

Haggis_Trap, If a bootfitter thinks that Tecnica boots are the ones for you, he'll send you to a place that has them. I went to CEM, my wife went to CEM, my son went to CEM. He doesn't sell boots, yet we all now have boots that he has fitted perfectly. You go to him he tells you what to get and where to get them, bring them back to him and he fits them. A bit of effort, but worth it.

jimmjimm, we are looking intoi this at present, i am waiting for the results of some testing on a planer before i go out and spend money on the same machine, all going well we will be able to offer this service in the near future, it does to an extent depend on the boot model as to whether it can be done without trashing your boots.

Haggis_Trap, when I was looking for boots, SMALLZOOKEEPER, CEM and LARGEZOOKEEPER all independently recommended the same boot. LARGEZOOKEEPER did not have any in store (or anywhere else within reach of Chamonix), but had some that would fit but would be wrong, or some that would be just about right and could just about be made to fit. He really didn't want to sell them to me though - and sent me away knowing full well that (due to timing) I'd be highly unlikely to get boots from him, at least for another 5+ years Wink. That's professional.
