Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Great news for the glacier and it should provide a decent base for this winter. Here's hoping for plenty more white stuff this winter snowHead

Other places:

Stubaier Gletscher: 30cm
Engelberg: 187cm - Was yesterday is outdated I think
Garmisch: 140cm - Think that's outdated too...

Best conditions look to be Zell am See at the moment...

it sounds great, but surely even normal September/October temperatures would melt a lot of it?

The snow lower down will almost certainly melt but up on the glacier at over 3000m high the temps could remain a little above freezing during the day and below zero at night. What fell recently could form the base for the winter season.

The bad news .....

So the snow base high up on the glacier increased from around 20cm to around 130cm but the warm weather since has reduced it to 64cm. So only ca 40% of the September snow survived. Crying or Very sad

The good news ......

Temps are due to drop and more snow is forecast snowHead

Holding on to 40% of early/mid-Sept. snow is pretty damn good, I'd say. And heavy snow is forecasted from tomorrow on.

kitenski,

We don't talk about last years snowfall, we are trying to forget it Wink

Can't remember exact figures but it was pretty similar, over 1m base on the glacier in Oct is good. After that it's not so much how much base but when was the last significant fresh fall of snow.

Hintertux and Sölden look as though they are going to see significant snowfall too (20cm+) in the next few days.

Wink...but you kinda re-enforced my point, if we have similiar levels to last year now, let's not get too carried away with fresh snow falling in September.....

From experience they generally open up more lifts after the official opening (mid Nov see my last post). I'd expect most if not all lifts above the Alpine centre to be open from this date.

Friends returned from Kaprun. Plenty of fresh snow. More snow than piste machines can handle. It was like skiing off-piste on the pistes, 40-50cm deep ungroomed snow.
