Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mount St. Elias – the world’s longest ski descent

Mount St Elias
Two Austrian skiers from Kitzbühel, Axel Naglich and Peter Ressmann, have just skied the world’s longest descent - Mont Saint Elias, in Alaska. The descent is a massive 5,489m (and 35K in length), made possible because you can ski from the top of the mountain right down to sea level. On Mount Everest, it is only possible to ski 3,448m in one go – from the summit to base camp.
The only previous attempt to ski this run ended in tragedy when two experienced skiers, Aaron Martin and Reid Sanders, fell to their deaths. Their bodies still remain on the mountain....From: http://pistehors.com/news/ski/comments/0747-worlds-longest-ski-vert/ and http://www.kairn.com/article.html?id=983

For details of film made of the expedition, see: http://www.livin-kickin.com/pdf/synopsis_vr_engl_020307_e.pdf

It took them eleven days to climb up the peak and then three days to descent.

If they genuinely climbed up and skied down, then that is a cool thing to do.

read a feature about guys doing the same on one of the peaks in the karakorum/himalayas. Think it ws in DM Ski & Snowboard mag. Piccies were awesome and it was just amazing to think that you could actually ski down it - I'd pooh my pants going down on a rope never mind two bits of wood!!!

Excellent effort although the comment after the article on pistehors does offer some interesting questions especially with the claims being made.

We thought about having a crack at this hill when we went on our amazing Alaskan odyssey a few years ago but after doing plenty of reading up on it decided it was a bit much of a mission. Fair dues to these guys for nailing it.

OMG. Brave or what? This comment gives an idea of the danger just of avalanche, let alone any other hazard: « A certains moments, je pouvais sentir les pas d’Alex alors qu’il était à 50 mètres devant moi, tellement la neige était instable et mouvante au sommet. » (Peter Ressmann)
Shocked Shocked
