I've heard that the conditions on the glacier are pretty dire at the moment. A L1 & L2 BASI course has just been run there. Anybody been there recently? What was it like?

Doesn't look good, was thinking of heading there for a couple of days in mid-Oct, anyone got an idea of how many kms is usually open then? Has it started to expnd the open area for winter by then or should I wait till Nov/Dec?
Is Soelden a better option for Oct?

We've booked a flight to Salzburg in October, and will probobly decide on a location closer to the time.
Hopefully, Hintertux will be ok, does anyone recommend a hotel near there, either in Hintertux or the valley?

levart, should be fine then down to the Tuxerfernerhaus (no idea how many KMs that might equate to). Soelden will have the World Cup races (I think) around 3rd week of October and normally fine for that. Don't like the drive up there though. Prefrer Tux.

AndyC, I have stayed here twice. It is about a 10 minute drive up to the glacier lift station.

Looking at the photo, it probably rained up there last night as it did here. I don't know about the weather there, but we have snowe forecast down to 2,500m tomorrow and the day after - this will bring it back white again! this is what a glacier really looks like folks!

I have it on good authority that there was a good depth of fresh powder for fresh tracks to be made last Friday morning.

easiski, Tux glacier has looked like that for the last two weeks, there were a couple of mornings when it was white, but by all accounts it did not stay white for long.

I would be the last person to say this, but think twice, if you consider skiing on the Austrian glaciers at the moment

Almost all the Alpine glaciers have been battered again this Summer. Most are bare and rocky.
Anyone who has never been Summer skiing in the Northern Hemisphere should go in the next few years, while they still can.
It is clear that the era of Alpine Summer skiing is mostly drawing to a close.

Then it's much worse than here. Ours looked like that this morning following the rain last night. It's still raining but getting colder, and the 24 hours of on an off snow promised will make it much better. From our point of view, conditions are much better now than at this time last year.

was in Saas Fee last week. they closed the glacier for 2 days as it was far to warm! Looks like we should all consider going south if we want real snow in the summer? ( I hear the HEMEL slope project is steaming ahead, could be an alternative)

elbrus, Were you on one of the Freeski camps in Saas Fee? coaching or being coached? If you were on the camp, would you reccomend them as a way to get your skiing fix during the summer with some training at the same time?
