Poster: A snowHead

Hi all I have noticed a little extra precipitation in the air these last few days especially during my 5 hour 7 mile drive home tonight. I wonder if there is a link between a summer like this and decent snowfalls in the winter?.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

There was a bit of talk about 20 year weather cycles that promise this summer as being wet and wild and this winter as being cold & snowy - we can but hope.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

So far this summer on Skye has been dryer than the last 3 (I had to water the garden tonight )
I belive that the East coast of Scotland has been wetter than the west so far this summer which is a little unusual.

Unfortunately, other parts of Europe are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures...

Slightly off topic, but could anybody tell me what sort of snow depth would be produced if the inch of rain that we had yesterday had fallen as snow in winter. Is there a conversion factor

Nick W, I posted some information on densities of powder snow and compacted (bashed) snow on this thread.
Since the density of water is 1000 kg/cubic metre, using a powder snow value of 30kg/cubic metre an inch of rain would be equivalent to 1000/30 = 33 inches of powder snow ( or just under 2 inches of bashed snow)

ollski, my return journey of 24 miles took 19 hours. There's something unsettling about sleeping in your car on a motorway.

Nick W, very roughly, 1 mm of rain is equivalent to about 1cm of level snowfall (ie. ignoring drifting effects). So an inch of rain would be nearly a foot of snow.
