Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski arpa & Chile

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'll probably in Chile towards the end of July.
Planning to stay in Santiago and travel up to La Parva or Valle Nevado for day excursions and get some skiing in.
Someone else mentioned Ski Arpa: http://www.skiarpa.com/skiing_in_chile_areamap_ski_arpa.htm

Any ideas on the level of difficulty of these?
I'd say I'm an advanced intermediate. I can do off piste and fine with black runs on piste but I'm imagining I'll need some fat skis for this in Chile, which I've never used before.
Maybe I just pick up some wide Monsters?

Are all these resorts on volcanoes or is it only the ones further south ?

Valle Nevado is volcanic, one of the black runs on the far side on the resort is reached by a T-Bar and there are huge lumps of volcanic rock on either side as you go up the lift trail. Just so you know the rental situation for skis is not great, when I was there the widest skis I could get were Bandit B2s. If you want a wider ski might be worth trying to sort something out before you go.

I'm thinking I rent in Santiago rather than in the resort. There's supposed to be a few ski shops there that are half decent aren't there?

Yes, our problem was that we arrived late Sat pm, nothing open Sunday then went up to VN Mon am. If you have time in Santiago then you should be fine.

Lots of ski shops on the road out of Santiago to Valle Nevado.

Is it possible to do deep powder skiing with no deep powder experience?
I'm a pretty confident skier and happy to chuck myself at anything. COmfortable with black runs and a bit of off piste before but not deep.

Gordon - maybe u should ask the guy that recommended it to you!!!!!

Well as I'm here! Arpa is as easy or difficult as you make it, the guides are very good and Toni Sponar the owner is a great guy. I skiied the deep powder there as a powder virgin and I can ski probably at a similar level to you and it was fine. Also there are lots of routes down of differning level and the guides will inform you accordingly and take you on those of your standard.

I would definately book a few days at Arpa cos once you do one day you'll die for more!

Enjoy Arpa ... you lucky lucky lucky boy! Say hi to Toni.

What kind of flight prices are you getting for Santiago from the UK (I guess that where you are)?
