Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

boredsurfin, Depends whether it is a purpose-built, French, concrete construction from the 1960s or a traditional town or village that happens to offer skiing.

'Resort' is the English word and 'station' is the French. So it depends which language you're using.

Station is clearly a concrete monstrosity built half way up the mountain full of Fat Face-wearing hoorays. Resort is picturesque hamlet at the bottom of the mountain where it should be.

Or ski town or ski hill or as the new NA terminology has it "mountain resort" so that they can sell real estate on the promise of golf, mtn biking, fishing etc in summer.

I've always assumed ski station meant something slightly artificial e.g. Les Arcs whereas resort might encompass a village that pre-dated the installation of lifts.

It's an EU directive... you know, like the curve on a banana. I happen to like my resorts to be at the bottom OK.

Well he could claim it was an abreviation of "Pedant is required".
It was such an obvious mistake (sometimes called greengrocers' apostrophe, I believe) that I assumed it was intentional. (Aspiring pedants please note correct posessive apostrophe for plural greengrocers).

A ski resort is the place you ski DOWN to at the end of the day with the light failing, the lifts closed and the cold beginning to numb your face. Normally the end of that last energy-sapping run from the very top, feelings of satisfaction all round... and there's nothing quite like seeing the lights of a friendly bar twinkling away at you as you descend.

A ski station, on the other hand, is the place you have to take the lift back UP to at the end of the day. There's a massive difference on the enjoyment continuum.
