Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi Folks

OK so it might be just deserves for not doing enough preparation, but my legs ache. The tops of my thighs at the front and the tops of my calves at the back - its not too bad on the flat, but stairs are hurting - apart from a fistful of ibruprofen is there anything I can do - heat, cold, stretches etc.

Message or stretch, soak in the bathtub. I don't know if it actually help with recovery. It sure feels good.

A nice long easy walk (no stairs) does wonders for me after a hard day on the slope.

Megamum, It's too late for a cold soak in the bath (works very well) all you can do now is to work out the excess lactic acid . . . a long gentle walk that includes some steps or hills. Don't go at it like exercise and get all out of breath and a raised heart hate, just ease it out and have a good gentle stretch afterwards.

Eat some carbs within 30 mins of finishing exercise. Any longer than half-hour and the muscles don't absorb the energy for another 24 - 36 hrs, leading to overaching muscles the next day.

There is emerging research that suggests stretching muscles either pre- or post-workout has little or no impact on the body. A steady warmup or warmdown, like marching, may be more effective.

Megamum, just enjoy that rather self-satisfied feeling of a really good day of skiing!

As abc says, a good soak in the bath feels great (even if it's only of psychosomatic help)... & you can't beat a large G&T, in my experience Laughing

A nice easy jog for fifteen minutes should sort it out.

Only the first few minutes will really hurt.

Honest.

The technical name for this is delayed onset muscle stiffness Whitegold & Masque have the right advice. some low impact exercise to keep the muscles ticking over for the next few days should work, but I would walk rather than run as Mosha Marc suggested

Yes, I agree - the best cure for aching legs is more gentle exercise. I'm a great one for not following my own advice, of course. After my Snowboard in a Day course on Sunday, I did a load of gardening all day Monday followed by teaching a (not very gentle) aerobics class in the evening. It is a miracle I could move at all on Tuesday!

Get on an exercise bike on a low gear (low resistance).

Failing that, drop something heavy on your foot. That'll take your mind off your achy legs. wink Madeye-Smiley

I like Boots Freeze Gel.

If it's really bad or for the future ice for a few minutes, and bandages overnight!

Well I had quite sore legs this afternoon, having hiked up to the foot of the south side of the Meije. I am currently giving them the hot-bath-followed-by-lots-of-wine treatment. Working so far.

Megamum, Just to zip right back on topic...was this soreness from skiing? With those muscle locations, you might be leaning too far backwards...just a thought...

I was going to say just that, but didn't dare! I have to work on not leaning back and, when I do lean back, that's exactly where I get pain.
