Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

after 198 rossi 9s planks what next

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi
Been skiing on planks for the last 18 years , mostly slalom skis from 198m to 203 in length. My current skis are 198 rossi 9s and have been great skis. However I really want to get a new pair of short skis.
I ski mainly in scotland on ice and crud dodging death cookies but I often go abroad once a year to france or italy. Most of my skiing is done on the faster, steeper runs. Groomed piste is only there to get me from one run to another so is of no interest. Favourite run is the grand couloir in courcheval.
I like quick turning, light feeling skis not too stiff on the shovel but stiff in the tail. I weigh 15.5 stone and am about 6ft.
Living in scotland and not being a member of any ski clubs I dont have the opportunity to demo skis so rely on advice. I have looked at the rossi 9s oversize and the salomon 10 3v but the shops advise against them saying that you need to be skiing flat out to make them work. If I am barking up the wrong tree with these skis could someone point me in the right direction.
TIA

I have a pair of 3Vs, the 2003 model, in a 176. They are great on piste/ice, and love to be opened up. Yes, the faster you go, the better they handle, but I do really like them. I'm about 6ft, and around 13 stone.
You may want to consider the Volkl 5*, in that case, I wouldn't go beyond a 174 - I recently demoed that length, and thought it was a bit too long for me.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You cant go wrong with 5 stars going off what you've said they are quite stiff but your a similar size to me and i found them just right where my smaller friends found them a little too stiff.

For 5* or 6* I wouldn't go higher than 168 and shorter than 161. In fact I deem the 6* in 168 a more polivalent (sp?) ski than a short modern Sl ski...but then, I'm 174-175 cm tall and 72-75 kg (depends which week) which should be a bit shorter and lighter than both The Fox Hat and acrabat

Acrabat - slalom skis have got a lot more specialist than they used to be.. have a look at 'all mountain' or 'freeride'. You can (of course) ski anything on any ski, but powder is much easier on Pocket Rockets, than on the 3v - no matter how do a skier you are.

The new Xcream Ltd ski looks to be neat. I don't know about Volkls, 'cos I've never used them.

I went out looking for the 5* as recommended but couldnt find anywere with a pair to sell. Although it was not my first choice, I got a pair of 164 Atomic sl11:12 (2003/4 model) for a very good price. Powder is not an issue for me as I am lucky if I get to ski it once every 2 years in our scottish resorts. I hope these will do the biz. If I have made a huge tit of myself buying these feel free to tell me as the bindings havnt been mounted yet so I still have time to back out.

acrabat, you did ask Very Happy The SL11 is an FIS approved race ski, it's wouldn't be my choice for a recreational ski, I'd not compare it to the 5* in anyway at all. I just bought a pair of 5*'s mail order from http://www.sportexpressonline.de/ actually.

acrabat, hope you have fun on these. I just got a pair of 9S skis, by far the shortest pair I have owned in the last 25 years at 160cm. Hope to get some more exercise out of these, though I'm keeping my screams and 1080s for big mountains and teaching.

When I was a kid, the best all-round skis for me were a pair of 205 Blizzard Competition Firebird RS - great at everything except bumps due to my size and their length. Having been told so much about the modern skis and how they would revolutionize my life, I was distinctly underwhelmed until I discovered Atomic SL11s in 2003. They are so lively and reactive but don't crash-dive like a frightened submarine in powder! I knew they were right for me after 2 turns. My childhood experience had led me to believe I wanted GS skis rather than slalom skis and it was only through spending some time testing different makes/models in St Anton that I got these. It is likely to be different for everybody, but it is well worth investing the time in testing.
