Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

After getting some helpful information on a GPS for Biking and Skiing from
's and Garmin's Helpline I decided on a
Garmin Edge 205
. The decision was helped greatly as I managed to buy one on eBay for £59 plus £12.99 P&P/Insurance. The RRP is £175 and typical online selling price is £120. It's a US version from a US Company but shipped from the UK, it arrived in 4 days. The only difference I can see is that the charger has a US plug on it for which an adapter was provided.
It's one of their specialist biking models and has little navigational capability (which I don't need) and is about the size of a small mobile phone. I charged it up, mounted it on my bike, installed all the drivers and other software and was itching to give it a run out. A quick drive at lunchtime proved it worked and as soon as I could finish work I set off to try and get a ride in before the expected storms arrive. I went on one of my usual routes which is on Peterborough's
Green Wheel
cycle network and this particular part is 60% on country roads which lead nowhere and 40% off road, being in the fens there is not a hill in sight.
You just need to turn it on press the timer button and you're away. The display shows various information on speed, time, distance, elevation etc. The one piece of information missing is ascent/descent which only appears after it's downloaded. This could be an issue for skiing use and if so the 305 has a barimetric altimeter built in which enables this.
When I got home I downloaded it onto my PC on the Garmin Training Centre software and onto the MotionBased Portal which is also owned by Garmin. The output which I think is pretty neat is
here
. It's quite similar to SportsDo and the pricing is similar (except the desktop agent is free with MB), you are allowed your last 10 activies with the free subscription. Subsciption is I think about £4 or £5 monthly. If you search some of the other trails (ie Zermatt) there are plenty of skiing routes on there too.
All in all I'm pretty impressed so far especially at the bargain price I paid. I'll have to wait until January now to test it's skiing capability.
