Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Advice on skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've signed up for a ski course and have just found out they recommend ski's with a radius of 16 metres or less and no more than 70mm under foot.

Now, I have K2 Public Enemies, with a radius of 17 metres and 85mm under foot. Am I going to struggle with these skis? How much difference will it make? Confused I'm really hoping that I don't have to buy a new set of skis as my PE's are less than a year old!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Thanks. It's BASI instructor so I am thinking I need to get some different skis but I really like the ones I've got already!

They're a pair of GS skis so you should really be on 185 Smile

For that sort of course the max underfoot I would go is 74ish. If you really want to develop and refine your edging skills your best bet is to keep the PE's for the weekend.

I doubt they would send you home if you turned up on the PE's (depending on the trainer) but you'd sure get a few scowls.

Fogs, I did my BASI mostly on Dynastar 8800 with a 27m radius and 88mm underfoot. We did have lots of powder though. Very Happy Bit of a handful in the bumps & short radius, but fine on the high speed & variables. Guys that did it on Slalom skis, great on piste, but really suffered off piste in 2'0" of powder. Some trainers have a loathing for twin tips, so beware.
Depends on conditions, but I took the 8800's, a pair of Omeglass and some Intuitive 74's 50%/50% on-off piste. Swapped around a bit during the 2 weeks, depending on conditions and what we were doing.
If you're just going with one set, I'd plump for a good all mountain ski. Nothing too specialised.

Good Luck, where are you doing the course?

I had heard that some trainers had issues with twin tips...guess I'll be saving them for the powder days Very Happy . I've had a look at Fischer RX8's, Volkl Supersports or Allstars, K2 One Luvs. Any views on those?

Fogs, I've skied the Volkl Supersport 5 & 7 stars. I prefered the 5 Star, bit more versatile. Found that the 7 stars really didn't do their stuff unless you're going ballistic.

Why is this? Old school attitude? Considering the way the consumer market is headed it may not be long before the only skis without a twin of some mild sort may be FIS spec seems a bit unrealistic?

Guess its down to the fact that your demos just won't be as clean with roostering.

Well, I have some and really like them. But you're a bit heavier than me and a stronger skier (you must be, to be doing the BASI course!) so I would guess you would be better with the Burnin' Luvs. Lots of people rave about them.
