Poster: A snowHead

For those who don't know the jargon this seems like a reasonable explanation (albeit re the wrong sport)

Now a few manufacturers are launching these - the next big thing or specialist gimmick?
Do they scare the race bred puritans?
After all its only 3 years ago I walked into a fairly big UK retailer and asked about brakes to fit a 97mm wide ski to be told by the boss:" Those skis are a real specialist product - we don't stock any skis of that size and can't see that we ever will"
Lots of Seths on the rack the following year!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

fatbob, soft snow only IMO but that won't stop some Scandis having them as a one ski quiver
My lotuses have pretty much no camber and a much longer tip rocker than conventional skis. I did find this made them very easy to ski for their length - you could change the shape of a turn through the turn very easily and they moved through the La Grave trees surprisingly easily

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yep, easy to do, 10 easy steps:
1.
Buy a second hand pair of skis that have metal construction, in my case Atomic Powder Plus
2.
Remove bindings
3.
On your garage floor chock up the tips on a block of wood (about eight inches high)
4.
Put carpet piece or thick layer of newspapers under skis.
5.
Drive car onto skis so as to flatten them down with tips chocked up under stress.
6.
Leave for a couple of days.
7.
Drive off, assess negative rocker and repeat if needed.
8.
Mount bindings
9.
Mount chairlift
10.
Find the Pow!

rungsp, Does that work for 203cm slalom race skis do you reckon? (maybe better with 207 GS boards though...??) as I have a few pairs hanging around that are generally otherwise destined for the chalet wall...

David Murdoch, the key thing is the metal sheet in the ski construction. Metal can be bent....fiberglass etc can't.
If they are going in the skip or on the wall then why not try the method above?
Ifd it works...happy days.
If they don't hold shape then on the wall they go.
If they break....well so what really.
Go for it and let us know how you get on.

Megamum, Why not just read about the production of barrel staves then?

comprex, Couple of old Austrian gents were skiing around Obergurgl on barrel staves and wearing traditional dress, seemed a very good way of getting free drinks. The edge hold on the decking of the Neader Hut wasn't too good, but it definitely demonstrated why leather pants were being worn in defence from the splinters!!
(Even further of subject) My Jobe Eliminator Mono ski 25 years ago cost more then than 2 pair of top of the range snow skis

Dypcdiver, little new under the sun, I remember DIY barrel stave/ski conversion plans published in magazines as late as 1979.
