Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

More and more film producers are putting snow on the big screen. If you're looking for a bit of adrenaline and popcorn, while other people do the dangerous stuff here are three snow movies for the coming months...

Impact by Warren Miller. Latest globe-trotting spectacular by the maestro, or rather his descendants (he just does the voice-over these days). Touring cinemas across the UK, starting 15 October.Details here.

Soul Purpose by Teton Gravity. "SOUL PURPOSE takes an introspective look at the driving forces behind an athlete’s devotion to skiing and boarding and its lifestyle." Showing 14 October (and then subsequent months). See posting below for Dark Summer's premiere, and click on link on this posting for details of showings at Electrowerkz in Islington. Includes live bands, DJs and VJs, games, prizes etc. Details here and here.

Snow's in the House by Warren Smith. "A story of the evolution of Freeskiing and how it has reached it's modern day level. Also an insight into the resort of Verbier and how it helped the freeskiing movement. Historic footage and modern day action." The premiere is on 11 October at the Prince Charles Cinema, off Leicester Square. Details here.

Thanks, nbt. I can't believe I made the same mistake twice. I was copying and pasting from the earlier thread. Cheers

Just a little correction for you. Soul Purpose will be having its premiere on Thursday 14 October (instead of the 15 October date) at the Dark Summer launch party in the function room of the Hand and Flower pub opposite the Daily Mail Ski Show.

DarkSummer, Natives are still showing 15 October. Can you clarify this? Are you premiering the film, with a showing at Electrowerkz the day after?

Or is the 15 October party cancelled?

Sorry, been away for a few days.

As far as I am aware the party on the 15th is cancelled and we are premiering the film. I will double check that for you and post back soon.

Next screening of Warren Miller's 'Impact' is this coming Saturday 23 October at Britain's highest restaurant - the Ptarmigan, just below the summit of Cairngorm.

Local website Winterhighland.com have put together a great party night (or an earlier showing for families) including return bus from Aviemore, ride up the funicular, film and party with drinks and canapes....all for the bargain price of £15 per head.

*bump*

Well, we bought the first tickets in the UK for Warren Miller's Impact, then chose our seats. Then we went off for a pint in the pub and came back just before the film was due to start. Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance, as they say Smile

What an excellent film, far better than I remember last year's being. Some of the sections had me breathless, especially the tree-skiing and the powder sequences. Watching Bridger Gile, a 4 year old from Aspen was especially humbling, he gets more "angulation" than I've ever been able to get Sad

We did find out that the film as shown on tour is trimeed from the full version, with the more commercial / less relevant sections trimmed out. Not yet decided whether that's a good thing, the film we saw was excellent there's no doubt, but even including the adverts and the bit in the middle when they give away prizes, it lasted only 90 minutes. Watching the trailer again (download via David's link above), there are a few sections missing, including a feature on Glen Plake water-skiing. Well, I can live without that, water-skiing doesn't do it for me in the same way that snow does!

The filma had been shown at the snow shows, but in an even more heavily edited format. I'm looking forward to next year's film, and I will make sure to buy a copy of Impact : I didn;t pick up last year's Journey as at the moment I'm short of cash and since I can't remember it, I'm guessing that it isn't outstanding. impact, however, most definitely is.

Overall, I'd say it's well worth the trip, as I said some sections are simply breathtaking, and no matter how good your home cinema, it just doesn't have the same impact (sic) as seeing it on the big screen

(can I have free tickets for next year now, Jim?)

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

Typical, always forget some bits!

Just watchd the trailer for last year's film, and even watching the trailer I can't remember the film!

Anyway, back to impact. Just wanted to mention that the crash sequences were excellent: no, not more ten minute montages of people falling on slick ice getting off chairlifts, actual crashes of people trying anf failing to land big jumps, or racinf 4-corss of whatever.

And it was nice, as my snowboarding pal pointed out, not to have to sit through, for the first time in memory, ten minutes of hot-dogging / freestyle / aerial ballet. Yes, it's hard, but having seen it for the past X years on the trot, a film without it was a breath of freash air

and lastly but by no means least, big cheers to the uphill ski club who were present, and more specifically to the young lady whose name I don;t remember, but who will be particpating in her first ski-bob race in Ptsdahl in December, then heading out to Kimberley in Canada for a season's trainin and racing. Good luck. I hope you get as much air as the ski-bob jumpre in the film.

Right, better do some work now Sad

Part III. Just discoivered I can't post in this forum, whihch seems to be the logival place to put it, but anyway:

I haven;t yet seen it myself, but Greg Stump's Blizzard of Aaahh's, widely regarded as one of the all-time classic ski films, has at last been released on DVD, in a new, re-mastered edition. there's been talk elsewhere on the forum of the beginning being cut when it was viewed on the big screen, but given the info above, that DVD may well have the "missing" footage included.

£15 from the screenings of impact, or via the black diamond website

This article from The Denver Post provides some fascinating facts behind the Warren Miller movie business, now it's been sold to Time Warner.

If you've ever wondered how they choose to film and ski where they do, it's (surprise, surprise) a question of who stumps up sponsorship. Aspen paid no less than $50,000 to feature in the latest movie.

According to the article, Miller's competing filmmakers TGR and Matchstick Productions don't charge resorts for inclusion in their movies. So the $64,000 question is: are their films any better?

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
From my point of view, yes. Although I enjoy the Warrne Miller films, the rampant commercialism compared to other ski films is not only obvious but rather distasteful
