Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Germany's last glacier (Zugspitze) is covered for the summer

... for the last 14 years at Zugspitze, Huber and his staff have spread a giant tarpaulin to deflect the sun, keep the surface cool and shield it from the corrosive warm summer rain.

The shield, expanded this year by 50 per cent to 9,000 square metres, is due to come out within days. The operators say it will preserve 30,000 cubic metres of snow - roughly equivalent to a football-field-sized building that is one-storey high.

They should have made it from dendrix, then they could have some summer skiing there as well Smile

Interesting point in the article about digging half pipes which increases melting, presumeably because it exposes more of the glacier to the air.

I've always suspected snowboarding as being less sustainable than skiing ! snowHead

In Tignes they don't cover the glacier physically (yet) but instead plough furrows into it with their Kassbohers in an attempt to trap wind blown snow and build up greater depth. Effectively an alternative to the siting of snow fencing.

Presumebaly this idea is working right now to trap the new snow falling above 2000m. Apparently April and May snowfall is really useful at high altitudes to build up depth and provide a sacrificial protection toglaciers and neve fields during the summer melt.
