Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snoworks www.snoworks.co.uk have a couple of trips going this summer. The trips are not cheap but then travel in Latin America even without skiing rarely is.

I did a course with Snoworks in Val d'Isere this season and from that experience I rate them very highly. They have a lot of repeat clients each year which is also obviously a good recommendation.

Just book a flight to New Zealand, best bet head to Queenstown, loads of cheap accommodation and go skiing. This is what I did 10 years ago, met loads of fellow skiers, skied at about 10 south island ski fields over a 6 week period.

b.dudman, PS : My trip started from good old Kingston Upon Thames / Surbiton - not that this makes any difference, but I just noticed that's where you reside.

waynos, how much would you budget a 4-6 week trip at? I have thought of the NZ option but didn't fancy it on my own.

b.dudman, As I said it was 10 years back, can't really remember figures but I guess 1K for return flight, generally speaking cost of living and skiing is fairly cheap in NZ compared to Europe. If you do some time at the "club fields" - run by enthusiast rather than corporates and offer a very different ski experience - you could ski very cheaply. I did a week at craigieburn club field with accommodation, lift pass, tuition & food for less than £300 for week if memory serves me right. Not sure if this still holds true.

As for meeting people, I really didn't have a problem, I stayed in hostel type accommodation so you're going to meet up with someone.

Check out these books on amazon for NZ skiing, I've a copy of "A Guide to the Ski Areas of New Zealand by Marty Sharpe " which was a real help when I was out there.

I've never been to South America so can't compare, but you'd be hard pressed not to have a good time in NZ though.

I'll venture to guess NZ is can be a DIY thing. Buy a ticket and a guide book, you can start the organising from there and be flexible, too. While S. America areprobably bettter done with a group and guide.

So, if you're going to use a TO anyway, might as well go to S. America for a taste in different culture.

b.dudman, Have a look at this trip to Chile. It's for singles. As you sort out your own flight you can always stay over longer. It's on my list of possibilities for next year.

I know a few people who are going on the trip (myself included). If my experiences of heliskiing in Verbier with Warren this season are anything to go by then it will be a superb trip

I love being escorted around the mountain Puzzled Errr No . This is the worse way to experience the Southern Alps.

Not only are you profitering western tour companies you are depriving local busineses ?

Have you done both? What makes it "the worst way"?

South America is also very feasible for a homebrew trip - Argentinians and Chileans are genuinely helpful and even if you speak minimal Spanish you'll usually fnd a way of working things out.

Have used Scott Dunn many times to take groups to Chile. Good idea to go via Buenos Aires, spend a night, see the city and some tango, then on to Chile. La Parva, El Colorado and Valle Nevado all just over an hour's drive from Santiago and great skiing if you go in August/September. Avoid July as school holidays. Pistes very quiet, no moguls as not enough people to create them. Many international teams in summer training. La Parva is my favourite resort with some challenging skiing - all 3 resorts are linked. No hotel at La Parva - just self-catering. Portillo is fine for a few days with some good skiing. Termas de Chillan on a volcano but very little for an advanced skier. Don't book until there is a very good base as the air fare is the major part of the trip. Forecast predicts a great season.

b.dudman,

Damn you for starting this thread.

After recommending Snoworks I took another look at their Chile and Argentina trip this summer myself and over the weekend I have been trying to talk myself out of it. However I am of a certain age and although I have never paid anything like that sort of price for a ski trip before, this afternoon I went ahead and paid my deposit.

Damn you I say.
