Poster: A snowHead

The forecourt and facilities of Aviemore railway station - familiar to thousands of skiers every winter - are being transformed by a £1.5 million scheme now under construction. This will improve interchanging for ski buses, superior cycle and parking parking, and general improvements to the public and private transport flow.
The station 'square' will become a more pedestrian-friendly area, with changes to the road layout and bus zones. There will be a new roundabout where the 'ski road' to Cairngorm junctions with the road into Aviemore.
The work is due to be completed by mid-July.
This report from Strathspey & Badenoch Herald.
Any comments?

There will be a representation from the snowheads that the improvement amounts to no more than any contributor to climate change and those responsible for the decison making should be rounded up and shot.
Personally I think £1.5 millions can hardy improve the situation.

This will have nothing to do with winter... Aviemore is much busier (and better) in summer and the place deserves a better station. That end of town has always looked a bit unwelcoming so hopefully this will improve the experience.

Is your prediction based on Tarot cards, or some other form of mystical fortune telling?

Swiller, I agree with you. My understanding is that Aviemore is finally gaining some success and hopefully these enhancements will help give it a great future. Somebody (I think it was a bloke in a pub) told me that the place now functions as a commuter village for Inverness.
Aviemore suffered the great misfortune (back in the early 1960s) of being tied up with the awful corrupt architect John Poulson who thought it should look like something transplanted from the Elephant & Castle.
A more harmonious design solution in those early days, instead of the alien concrete precinct that emerged, could have got the place off to a great beginning. It is, after all, set in one of the most landscapes in Britain.

John Poulson was only 'allowed' to be corrupt because lots of people, generally in public office, were also corrupt.
His architectural designs did not win many awards but were no better/worse than other 60's designs.

... but he did design a swimming pool for the city of Leeds that came out short of competition length, which was very much not intended. Not sure where the blame laid.
I strongly disagree that Poulson was "allowed" to be corrupt. He would have initiated the corrupt deals, and then repeated the 'winning system' around the country. However it's true that a bent civil servant doing business with a corrupt architect is just as guilty.
I suspect that his stitched-up deals probably resulted in worse architecture than might have happened if there had been a more competitive situation.

Not sure of the Leeds details but the architect who designs a swimming pool would not necessary be responsible for the actual pool design. This would normally be done by a specialist engineer.
What was the name of the TV commentator who was also found guilty of corruption regarding swimming pool designs/contracts?
Edit Hamilton Bland? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/91234.stm Many thanks Cathy

It takes 'two to Tango'. Lots of people were quiet happy to take money/gifts from him and award his firm contracts.

Just to correct a previous poster about having 'no snow'
This is not factually correct - please see winterhighland.com for actual pictures of skiing in the past few years
It may suit the media to perpetuate stories of no skiing being available in Scotland any more - but the reports of its demise are greatly exaggerated and we're doing the skiing and tourism industry a great disservice to perpetuate these myths.

The story I was told that when they dug the hole in the ground, and lined it with concrete, it was exactly the right length.
Then someone remembered that it also had to be lined with tiles.
Don't know if it's true, or just another Leeds urban myth.
