My Dad had his knee replaced in February and I went out with him for his first ski on it yesterday! He said it felt good, any trepidation was pretty much psychological.

If you had a joint replacement it done to get back your life then you may as well.
The ankle is well supported by a boot.
I'm very happy for my knee replacement patients to ski.
Getting in /out of the boot may be difficult - a nice pair of those rear loading boots from the 80's would be perfect.

I ski with a guy with two artificial knees. He's one of the best skiers on the hill wherever he goes. He complains about all sorts of things, but not his knees. For him they are a miracle, he could barely ski at all prior to surgery and ate advil like m&ms. Not anymore.

I used to have a pair of those in the 80's, made by Nordica. Dead easy to walk in too.
Sadly they died, the plastic went brittle and they literally fell apart.
I haven't seen any since.

My french neighbour is in his mid 80s. Not a local but has skied here most of his life, they've owned their apartment since 1969. He knows all those of a similar age here and went heli skiing in Canada with a group of mainly instructors when younger. He had both hips replaced last year in 2 ops. He skied a bit between the 2 but is now back in full swing on both. Not just pootling around, still skiing anything, to a good standard.

Yes I did it to get my life back, but the concern for me is that whilst the ankle arthroplasty gives plenty of movement in dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, it gives virtually nothing in pronation and supination, and any excessive medial or lateral rotation could prove catastrophic. Thus I'm slightly worried that a ski twisting to one side could destroy my ankle before the binding releases and I'm not sure the boot would protect against that axis of movement.
I'm very tempted to try it but very very carefully.

My father had his knee replaced last year at the age of 75. He is going skiing in a couple of weeks. His specialist told him the new knee is significantly stronger that his remaining 'real' knee. He did need to get a specific letter from the specialist for insurance purposes.

I’m a ski instructor working the season as usual and skiing better than ever. I have two hip replacements in 2012 and 2013. Both knees replaced in 2917. No pain, excellent stability and feel fit and strong. I’m mid fifties. Good luck and all the best

My father has reported back from his trip to Italy that his knee hasn't felt this good skiing in years. He is 76 in a couple of weeks.
