Poster: A snowHead
|
There was a report published yesterday by the University of Bern.
Herre is a link to loads of articles. Basically the thinking is by 2030 snow freezing level will have risen significantly & resorts including Wengen will have to diversify or go out of business
ONe idea is to boost summer numbers by atttract people from the hot southern Med countries to cooler mountain air.

stanton, my German (it is German, isn't it) is not so good.
I was thinking of making this a news item, but you beat me to it.
This was discussed on Radio 4 news yesterday. I thought they were referring to a report on the problems of low lying resorts from the Swiss Environment Ministry and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) mentioned by planetark and sciencedaily.
Is this the same stuff your link refers to?
This report follows on from similar stuff done in 2003 (see bluewaternetwork, scienceblog and CNN).
1. Reports like this are presented as if something new, but as Konrad Bartelski stated in his interview during the report, this problem has been going on for some time.
2. It is usually linked to Global Warming, and global warming is all our fault
3. On Channel 4 on Thursday there is a program entitled: The Great Global Warming Swindle. Could be worth watching (if Ray Zorro will let us).

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

The report yesterday was more to do with warning resorts & towns that rely on Winter Sports that MUST diversify & make plans before 2030 (23 yrs time) otherwise they will be history.

Another leak? Presumably this is being fed to the press now because of the current warm wet weather conditions.

Even if global warming (however caused) is no more than a distinct possibility over the next few decades, then it surely makes sense for a community that is dependent upon cold weather for its economic well being to diversify.

Agreed. Long term thinking and planning ahead, IMO something to be admired.

laundryman: also agree. Far to much has been concentrated on blaming human actions and attempting to alter these, rather than accepting climate change and trying to deal with the consequences.

It's curious how many ski areas are only just thinking about this. We've been doing it for at least 10 years!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

easiski, is that not more to do with the fact that you've always had a summer season and you've needed plenty of diversification to keep everybody happy then ?

You know it makes sense.

brian, That's obviously a factor, but the diversification has been a direct result of the concern about the lengevity of summer skiing in the northern hemishere. Prior to this there was little else to do int he summer apart from the tennis and walking.

easiski, yes, I guess summer skiing's days are numbered. Which is a great shame Kind of ironic that L2A is ahead of the game in summer diversification when it's probably one of the last places that'll really struggle in the winter.
