Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Going backwards

I need help in spinning from backwards skiing to forward skiing. I'm happy going from forward to backwards but when I try to change back I nearly always catch an inide edge - nasty fall at speed.
help!

bob sleigh, look to the sky. (it was a tip given to me in Aspen - I kept looking down at my skis, which was causing me problems. Look up and the problems go - or at least that worked for me.)

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

i'll that; i did catch the end of a ski programme that said all you do is push one ski backwards to innitiate the turn.

Having twin tips with the bindings mounted centrally helps I'm told.

There are lot's of ways to do this bob sleigh, but the simplest is to weight the tails of the skis by pushing your calf muscles against the back of the boot (sitting down a little may also help).

An alternative is to pressure the tip of one ski and the tail of the other.

Speed helps.

I found that making the change quickly helps as well. The more you practice the easier it gets.

I found it was a case of initating a turn when your going backwards and then getting the skis flat, pivoting your shoulders and then the skis just follow. As long as you've got the skis flat they just pivot around the bindings. It took me a while to suss it out, and it can still only go from backwards to forwards in one direction. Twin tips do seem to help though.

That's a good point lower - you'll be able to turn in one direction more easily than the other - so it's worth trying both ways.

Completely agree with lower, just try getting the skis flat and spinning. Or try compressing slightly then de-compressing rapidly and spinning (like a small hop)

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

This may be obvious but if you have your skiis too far apart it is going to make it much harder.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Similar to the above but the easiest way to learn this is to do a hockey stop whilst going forwards and stop digging your edges in before you stop, flattening your skis. This should let you spin 360. Once you can do that then turning from back to forward becomes a lot easier. Twin tips help but you can ski backwards and spin on most skis.

The other, more physical way, is to pre-set a spin with your arms and shoulders and then throw your arms round and jump 180. This takes a lot of practise and can involve much pain.
