Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Weekend Ski Breaks?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello everyone,

Just joined the forum and have to say I'm extremely impressed with the site!

I'm off to the 3Vs (Mottaret) in Feb, but that's 5 months away Sad
so in the meantime a friend and I are planning a long weekend blast in December somewhere in Europe (not the 3Vs) to get a taste of something different and alleviate the waiting for the main trip in 2005. Very Happy

Where would you recommend for a weekend's ski based on the following criteria?
-available accomodation for a long weekend
-short distance to slopes from accomodation
-runs for both boarder (him) and skiers (me)
-enough reds and blues for a weekend
-snow cover in Dec
-short transfer times

and whatever else you think might be important....

Cheers

Chris

Havre a look for my "early Season" thread for some pointers - it may be a couple of pages back, can;t recall if it's in here or over in "trips" though

to snowHeads crispy

used these guys before in December www.flexiblebreaks.com - v good, could try them. Turin to Sauze = 1 hour. There is also www.skiweekends.co.uk and many others. Also you can do it yourself, ring the tourist office and get a list of local hotels, chalets, apartments etc.

snow cover in december - do you play the lottery? If booking now then go high, otherwise decide on an area and get the cheap flight now, then leave the finding accomodation etc until you know where the snow is. There is tons of information around here, may take some time finding it though Wink

Oh by the way the "search" facility isn't obvious, it's hidden away under user facilities (top left in the mountain picture). Good Luck snowHead

Another welcome crispy. Here's notoriously bad typist's Early Season thread for you.

And don't forget Resorts in snowBase (under the mountain on the r.h.s). Links to loads of official web sites. For historical snow reports to get an idea of where it might be in December, you can't do better than the Ski Club (there's a link on the main index page). They don't cover every place but the main ones are certainly there.

Hi and welcome crispy, DIY almost always works out cheaper, especially if you are self catering. At that time of year an apartment costs almost nothing. I would suggest going high or close to mont blanc. You could book your flight and leave getting an apartment until you see how the snow bases are working out. Car hire cheaper than transfer almost invariably, and gives you the option of moving around on day tickets. Are the Leeds Bradford flihts going again this year?

crispy, welcome. Val 'should' be open from November 27th. You could combine a long weekend with the World Cup men's downhill etc between Dec 11th and 14th.

I plan on going myself, it's a 30 min run up from Bourg St Maurice.

Anyone know if the link from Orelle to Val T will be open from November as that is much quicker to get to from Turin that Val T itself.

crispy, give Engelberg a try, I am. It satisfied your criteria in mid Jan last year and I'll probably go again in early Dec. Try the Engelberg website for accommodation, Swiss are quite cheap to Zurich at the moment, and transfer there by train in about 2 hours for about £35.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Kit Wong, I was going to go there that time last year, but it is not very snow sure at that time of year - they only had two short runs open at the top of the glacier.

Instead I went to Ischgl and had a great time with over 100km of open piste.

Flights to Turin and a visit to Cervinia might be a valid option. But it is all risky that early.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

What's good year may be pretty poor the next. If you want to play it dead safe with snow cover, try a big glacier, 2Alpes has the largest skiable area in the Alps; or somewhere with large snowmaking facilties-any offers?, and hope it stays cold.

I still aim to get to Engelberg in Dec and maybe catch Dark Summer and their eye candies out there strutting their stuff. You can always book flights first and decide on accommodation later. From Zurich you can get to Andermatt easily and also Davos and St Anton at a bit of a stretch.

Ray Zorro, Used this link last year....it only opened mid-December and when we were there at Xmas the link was still pretty dodgy and needed a bit of an uphill section to get from Orelle to Val T....that said the skiing on the Orelle side was lovely! Their webside is www.orelle.net doesn't show a planned opening date yet though.
