Poster: A snowHead
|
I was skiing over the weekend and had pain along the outer edges of my feet. A bit of internet research suggested that this might be caused by supination (my normal shoes always wear out on the outside first). Would be grateful to anyone who could advise whether this sounds like a likely cause of my foot pain....
My boots have some canting adjustment - would changing the canting help compensate for this problem? If so, which of the adjusters on my boots should I turn, and in which direction should I turn them? (I have Head's dream thang 9 boots - with adjustable cuffs - if that helps....)
Grateful for any advice.

robertsnerys, the best suggestion I could give is get yourself to a good bootfitter!
Where abouts in the UK are you?

WTFH, thanks for quick reply.
I'm in London - but have run out of money after spending it all on my skiing holidays - and can't run to profeet prices. So was hoping for a stop-gap do-it-yourself job. It's not so painful that I can't ski, just uncomfortable.

robertsnerys, Try turning the cant rivets on the outside of the boots from the arrow facing up, to the arrows facing down. Nothing else for the momment, try that and tell us if things change.

robertsnerys, not sure if you're after canting or cuff adjustment, the basic cuff adjustment is pretty simple and doesn't need a professional bootfitter:
Take your liners out of your boots and footbeds out of the liners.
Put footbeds in boots shell and insert feet.
Clip up boots to your normal settings
Adopt a normal relaxed tall skiing position.
Adjust the cuff adjusters until your calves are centred in the shells.
Job done
If you've not got enough adjustment range best seek professional help or if you need canting as opposed to cuff adjustment again a professional is the best option

robertsnerys, Before diving in with tools etc. it might be a good idea to read the thread on this forum (page 2 at the moment) called 'DIY Boot Stretching'. The symptoms sound similar to those which Pete Mellis had.

rich, that's pretty fair, but I think the centreing is also a function of muscle tone vs. liner stiffness, I prefer to look at a natural stance with the liner in and the cuff buckles done, then release the buckles and check for compensatory motion.

comprex, The All Mountain Skier has a nice trick which I tried out last time I set my boots up.
You stand in skis on a foam pad with small levels on each ski, this gives direct feedback of the effect of changing the cuff adjustment on how the skis will sit on the snow, the general aim being for flat or slightly on the inside edges, works a treat.
Unfortunately my boots won't adjust as far as I really want.

rich, try widening your stance a little.
What I mean is this: if you have a narrow stance - i.e. boots near touching - then you are more likely to be on your outside edges. Widening to a neutral stance (about pee-width), and you may find you are flatter on your boots, or even on the inside edges.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Wear The Fox Hat, 50/50 chance unfortunately guessed wrong. I'm heavy on the inside edges. Skiing narrow actually helps.
Got some new toys to experiment with now - cant strips

rich, I like your tip for cuff adjustment, tried it and for me too I need more canting. So, where did you buy the cant strips?
