Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Still struggling to decide where to go in March!

Think Europe would be better as we only have a week.

Which hotel would you recommend for convenience in Zermatt. Nothing too posh! (or expensive)

Also what is the transfer time from Geneva?

Thanks!!! wink

Transfer time, by train, from Geneva, is quite significant (getting to the train station is easy though). Think it was 3 hours to Visp (?) and then another hour, more or less, up the mtn to Zermatt. If you can fly to Sion (I think it is) that's a lot closer.

Place we stayed was good, for what it was but I wouldn't have called it convenient exactly. I think to get convenient in Zermatt you will have to pay. If you can stay near the lifts do so. If not, then better to be near the start of the bus route, as they get rammed

The problem (??) with Zermatt is that there are a number of different mountains to go up. So a hotel that is convenient for the Gornergratbahn, is a bit of a distance from the cable cars.

Pick a hotel as close to one of the major lifts as possible. The lift system sucks and the buses are rubbish.

The 3-star Perren is a good choice. Reasonable value. Right next to the funicular. Possible to ski back within a few meters of the hotel when conditions are good:

waterskibabe, I have only been to Zermatt in the summer. Generally the town centre is quite a walk from the main lifts. If I were to stay in Zermatt I would stay in the little hamlet of Winkelmatten.

This where we stayed in the summer http://www.zermatt.ch/e/hotels/list/bijou.html - stupendous views of the Matterhorn and very close to the lifts. Could fit your bill Smile

You could do worse than the Hotel Perren - not that expensive or flash (relative to other places in Zermatt, that is), maybe 2/300 yards from the Sunegga funicular & Gornergrat station...nice little bar downstairs, and a short wobble away from the centre of the village

we've just got back from 4 days staying at www.hotelholiday.ch - casual 10 minute walk into town but only a few mins to the Sunnega funicular or bus stop, plus you can ski to within 50m of the hotel.

For what it's worth, I rate Zermatt very highly indeed. Yes, it's somewhat fragmented but that is offset by the sheer beauty of the place. We were fortunate in that the snow was good (although hard pack) and there was not a cloud in the sky for 4 days ... awesome.

Back to the hotel, excellent choice, service and food excellent. Where else in Zermatt can you eat a fantastic 4 course evening meal for 35 chf (about £16) - breakfasts good too and a nice relaxing bar area. If we go back to Zermatt I don't think we'd look any further. All for less than £50 pppn b&b.
