Hi proud dad. Dainese is the name you need for body armour.

2HI, have a look at the gear made by R.E.D. (it's Burton's helmet/protection line of equipment).
http://www.redprotection.com/bodyProtection.aspx
I'm not sure how their gear rates on the safety side of things, compared to the likes Dakine - but If you're son's a snowboarder, he might like the branding and look of their gear.
EDIT: I know that the R.E.D. helmets, available in places like Snow & Rock, all pass the same safety standards as Dakine, so I think you're on safe ground there.

For snowboarding you generally need a helmet, wrist guards and (optionally) knee guards (to prevent bruising in my case). I use to wear Dainese padded shorts too to protect my hips and tail bone.
So many boarders break their wrists and it's really easy to bang your head on the snow.
The only protective thing I wear for skiing is a helmet although Mr Snowy likes to wear a dainese turtle-shel like back protector too because he's always flinging himself off stuff and into trees.

Dainese. They make body armour and protection for bikers (the motorised sort), and should know what they're doing.

If choosing Dainese body armour under-jackets or back protectors go to a large motorcycle retailer - V much cheeper than specialist wintersports shops due to demand and market forces.
If you want even cheeper then choose CE marked armour in the motorcycle retailers made by companies other than dainese - just as good, but not got the 'name'.
