Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Smurfy, How long do they have and will they have their own transport?

There are some little resorts very close to Boston:
Wachusett Mountain www.wachusett.com
Blue Hills (Ragged Mountain Resort) www.thenewbluehills.com
Nashoba Valley www.skinashoba.com

Though most of the skiing round Boston is x-country there are at least 20 ski hills within 100-120 mile driving distance and at least one ski-train route http://www.firsttracksonline.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=494

Only skied America once and that was Killington from Boston. It was our first ever skiing holiday and was at a late Easter - April 19th ish. No ski school, just us skis and snow - and no idea. (we had had a few dry slope lessons so had 1% of a clue) It was fine for us as we didn't need lots of pistes, but with a private lesson we got up to the top (and back down again) after 2 days. Resort is strung out along a long road, there were shuttle buses but we had a car.
Didn't particularly like Boston - but on the way back we had a few days in Salem. Now that we really liked, so full of history - both witches and maritime (not that history goes back very far in the US). A very pretty town and only half hour from the airport.

Wachusett is a nice resort for a dayout.

But check the conditions before going. The Northeast is a bit snowlite at the moment.

They used to live there so love Boston and they have a brother over there who cant come home as he's there illegally. they're going for 10 days and will booze for all of them I'd say so thanks for the tips Justacey but this crew are hardened Bostonians and drinkers!! I dont think there'll be any sightseeing bar the skiing and the bottom of a pint glass!!

Masque, they'll have a car and are only going for 3 days I think so would be quite happy to do a long trip. Cheers for all the links. Thats given them loads to start planning Madeye-Smiley

Get to Killington.

Under 3 hours from Boston and just about the best skiing in the East at the moment. Probably the best apres too.

I second asland's "go north" suggestion.

Killington http://www.killington.com (2.5-3hr drive from Boston) is good. I would also add

Sunday River http://www.sundayriver.com
Sugarloaf http://www.sugarloaf.com
and Jay Peak http://www.jaypeakresort.com

(all at 3-4hrs) to the list of suggestions.

Loon ( http://www.loonmtn.com ) is OK (IMO all of the above are definitely better, but Loon is a little closer, ~2hrs).

Unless they are going for a day trip I would avoid Wachusett and Nashoba as too small (300m and 70m vertical respectively).

Smurfy,

As I read your posts they will be doing a 3-day trip. If so, I'd generally agree with the Nothern VT suggestions and would take a look at Killington, Sugarbush, and Stowe. Given they really like drinking, Killington is probably the best option. The village at Killington is basically a strip that runs along a road and, IMO, very much lacks New England charm. That said, it's probably offers the most terrain and the best party action in New England. Killington tends to get pretty crowded on weekends and personally, I'm not that fond of the layout. Crowds generally won't be much of an issue during the week unless you go during one of the school vacation weeks. If you want smaller weekend crowds, take a close look at Sugarbush. Night life at Subarbush would definately be quieter. Sugarbush is very near Mad River Glen which is a very retro area but with good natural snow Mad River Glen offers some of the most challenging terrain in New England. Loon would be a very good choice for a non-holiday weekday day trip. It's an easy drive from Boston and tends to get very crowded on weekends but would be a good weekday choice. Cannon is a bit further than Loon but tends to have smaller crowds and offers more challenging terrain. If you're intermediates, Mount Sunapee would also be a very good choice for a day trip. I'd probably give a pass to Wachusett unless you're looking for a quick day trip. It's actually quite good for what it is but it only offers about 1,000 ft of vertical. We go to Wachusett quite a bit because it's a much shorter drive for us. But from Boston, I think there are better choices.
