Lift passes in N America are expensive. Try Ski Independence - they often do a good price for lift passes even if you're not buying your holiday from them

provenjohn, how many people?
Just checked on skiextras.com - 2 adults & 2 teenagers for 10 days skiing at Heavenly will set you back £674. (not the cheapest place to buy, but they give prices online)
Give me a bit more info, and I can ask some instructor friends...

Look for a lodging package including lift passes.
Also, check the casino's. Sometimes they have great packages. There's now a new (a few years) gondola that goes stright from the village to the top.
Tahoe is an expensive place to ski. And the snow isn't all that great (wet and heavy, or icy). So if skiing is you main purpose of the trip , go elsewhere. But you'll miss the million dollar view of Lake Tahoe framed by the glizzering white snow.

provenjohn, yeah, I only looked at one resort - no point in buying tix for all resorts if you only ski them one at a time.
(oh, and I'd suggest that you don't buy from ski extras, rather wait until you get there, and buy one day at a time, depending on conditions, and where you feel like going to.)

You mean next Christmas? For skiing or partying?
I missed that. No, Xmas is not the best time to try the casinos. The real gamblers will be there in herds!
You must remember most US skiing are NOT on permenant glaciers. Xmas is early in the season for reliable snow fall. So, best pick a resort that has a lot of snow making capability. And good record of early snow falls will help too. I'd say the Rockies would be your best bet. Of the Rockeies states, My personal experience find Utah has more and better quality of snow. Though some resorts in Colorado has quite high elevation (e.g. A-basin @ ~ 10,000' => 3000 meter?) would proabably be good options too. Further north, Big Sky and Jackson Hole in Montana and Banff right over the border in Canada are something to consider. Then, there's Whistler (but that's in Canada, if that makes any difference to you)!!!
I've not been there. But rumor has it there's this not too big place in Colorado, I believe called Wof Creek, that always has the best early season snow. And the hardcore skiers head there. But I doubt there's much of apre-skiing activity there though.

provenjohn, check out this thread http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=15001 for the story of and pix from our trip to Heavenly last April.
It was simply the best skiing I have ever experienced. Snow depths were awesome and the grooming was pure corduroy. Can't rate it highly enough.
