Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another Atomic Binding question (varizone)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My SX9's have a varizone (I think that's what they call it) setting, which means you can slide the whole binding backwards and forwards (normally the same amount on both skis!)
I've fiddled around with the settings and found that the most forward "extreme" setting worked best off piste, in powder, and generally for me.
When I got back I looked at the manual (never read the manual first! NehNeh )
and it reckons that the furthes back setting is the one for powder.
Am I doing something wrong?

They're weird those bindings. There's absolutely no doubt that moving them to another position has a very definite effect, but I always find that no matter what kind of terrain I'm skiing, I'll try a different position and end up putting it back to the "extreme" setting after ten minutes.

Having said that, I don't ski off piste much (if at all) and tend to chuck myself probably a little too far fowards when skiing.

have this adjustment on cr412 binding on r11 skis (new skied 1 week), currently set at allround, just skied a week in Saas Fee with above set up and was very happy, skied the whole area (on piste) with no problems, improved my skiing dramatically, is it worth trying alternative positions?

It's always worth trying the other positions AW, even if you decide you prefer the first one. Try extreme if you're carving short radius turns, then give allround a go for more relaxed piste bashing.

On my old bindings, which broke on me Evil or Very Mad , I used to use them in the allround position (3 positions) but with occasional moving forwards to extreme for steep bumpy stuff. But basically I just left them be in Allround.

On the new replacement bindings (4 positions) the skis felt horrid to start, and were a bit of an effort turning at times, and seemed to want to run away from me. They were set in the back of the two allround positions. I moved them forwards to teh forward allround position and was much happier, and my skis felt more like I was used to. Again, the forwardmost extreme position was nice on the steep bumpy stuff on the mattun face one morning.

I will never cease to be amazed by how much difference it makes to the ski just by moving the bindings forward or back about 5 mm.

Forward is good if it's icy, gets the edge engaged nice and early. Otherwise they stay in the allround setting

My son Adam (he's 9) alternates between Extreme (front) and Speed (back), he says that on Extreme you only need to tilt your skis a little to turn, he likes Speed on 'nice long runs' and off piste. He races on Extreme. I'm glad to hear that the settings really do make a difference, perhaps I should accept the waits when he takes his skis off to change the settings more happily, I've been accusing him of wasting time making a change that makes no difference at all. Glad you have put me right Smile

This might depend a bit on the size of boot that you have. Without a long explanation of where boots are placed on skis to find the sweet spot suffice to say that usually the mide mark on a ski works best with a 300mm boot sole. If your boot is significantly larger or smaller than that the exterem position might simply be putting you back onto the intened sweet spot.

Usually the binding being a little further back is a little better in deep snow. Forwards on steeps and for some female skiers.

How very interesting....only skied my SX9's in the setting they left the shop in! Must have a fiddle around next time I get to the slopes....I'll try pushing them forward a bit to see what happens.

I always set mine to the extreme forward position. Must be why I have a penchant for steeper/bumpier stuff rather than powder...

It just makes them so much easier to get into a tight carve, as well as gets you further downslope for those steep bumps.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

What about female skiers on steep powder runs? Toofy Grin

It also depends on a number of other characteristics. The real question is, "Where do you balance on the skis?"
