Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Luggage on Eurostar / TGV

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've carried skis on the Eurostar and TGV before, and remember not being desperately popular on the TGV with a normal double ski bag.

However, I've now got a big wheely ski bag that I'd like to take on both trains in a couple of weeks.

Anyone got recent experience of how it is received, or where it can be stowed on the train securely? Last time I went on the train was probably 1996.

No-one will stop you taking it on, but there aren't any brake vans in the accepted sense on these trains, so you have to stow it with all the other luggage in the ends of the carriages. I think both Eurostars and TGVs have enough space for you to stand them end-on. Certainly, I've never had a problem.

I came back from Lyon via Paris to London last season (March) using both TGV and Eurostar without a problem.

The Eurostar is fine, just sling it up on the luggage rack, TGV at the end of the carriage as Paul says...

PAULMCK - Incidentally I undertook this journey on the way back from YOUR apartment! Cheers for a wicked few days Very Happy

flicksta,

The dedicated Eurostar snow trains to the Alps usually keep a couple of seats at each end of the carriage free for piling extra luggage in - it usually all seems to fit even when the train is full of skiiers / boarders.

Cheers chaps. I'm, not getting the snow train, going to Paris then Grenoble. Should be alright!

flicksta,

travelled both ways last week on tgv and Euro, with large skibag etc. ( etc.etc.etc....) No problems, plenty of dedicated space at the ends of the carriages. Vertical standing of skis slightly tricker, but was OK if you got there first...Also, not being a dedicated ski train, plenty of empty seats too.
Note that there are now signs saying " all lugagge left in the end of the carriage must have tag with passenger name and seat number on it". Well, saying it in French, but its as close as I get...

Return TGV had a bicycle compartment, with no cycles but perfeectly acceptable for ski stuff
They also managed ( despite their reputation for having an efficient train sytem when compared to the Uk) to have us with reserved seats in carriage 6, but er, no carriage 6. "Use 16" came the cry from the station staff, but it was already occupied... result: 3 hours on the "pull downs" between units - Ho hum.

If you don't have pre-purchased RER tickets to cross Paris, a quick tip, the machines that are the only source of them after hours in the evening, need small Euro cash, don't like cards, and have long, long queues - if your transfer time is tight, suggest you try to get some ahead of the game

(mind you, not sure how... some UK TOs sell carnets - and I guess the French Tourist place in Picadilly woudl be able to source some)

Ha ha, you can say that again Paul! Bl00dy insurance company shafted me on the journey as well but I don't care! It was a right laugh!

I see you have the new kitchen in, looks good! Probably come back to you next season, off to canada in March then three valleys in April, so no time to visit LDA this season..considering buying a pad out there myself too so may seek a bit of friendly advice from an expert nearer the time if thats ok..?

Have a good one,

Cheers!

Ah - but one of the wonderful things about France is that after quoting such regulations on signs they are cheerfully ignored by all and sundry including those in authority!

Robbof, Yes indeed, the kitchen is the dog's back wheels, and the bathroom isn't rancid anymore either.
Enjoy Canada and the 3 valleys (I'm surprised to learn there are other places to ski in France other than LDA - they won't be any good and you're wasting your money, so there).
Of course - feel free to ask any questions you want - send me a pm/email or give me a bell when you're ready.
