Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
Has anyone ever been able to use a 3 mobile phone in Les Arcs / Bourg St Maurice or anywhere in France. I haven't and each time I contact 3 they just tell me the say thing, try to select the network manually, it's doing my head in. I'm due to got again in a couple of weeks and would love to know if it's the network or my phone.

What's the phone?
I have definitely used 3 network phones successfully in France and I think so in Les Arcs but don't recall for certain.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Three has, in the past, been notoriously patchy for international roaming. It is no surprise you struggled, particularly in the mountains.
The choice of phone will make little or no difference to reception. All 3G models are dualband or triband today. They all have adequate antennae. They tick all the right boxes.
The issue will be with the network partners in France. Three does not own a network in France, so it relies on third-parties. Bouygues and Orange are Three's partners in France.
Have you actually tried selecting one of those two networks 'manually' rather than leaving it on 'automatic'? It is fairly simple to do.
Also, I presume you are placing 0044 and removing the 0 (or whatever other codes are appropriate) before you make any calls or texts?
If you can't roam effectively with Three (Bouygues / Orange) this time around in France, then you should consider switching to another carrier. Operators make a fortune from international roaming and you should expect high-quality service at all times.

If you're out there a lot, its worth buying a french sim card, as reception will be better and calls much cheaper.

harley, ...... French sim pay-as-you-go rates are not cheap......
...when I researched them last season they were about 90 cent - 1, 30 euro, per minute.
Might be worth your while comparing current rates with Sim4travel
I got one last year and use it a lot, especially as there are no charges to receive calls, or texts abroad.

Spent 6 weeks in Bourg last season using a 3 phone, what a nightmare, first i couldn't use my messaging service, then when i called three to complain i got charged and even got charged for them calling me to ask dumb questions about my phone. Then they cut me off because they had charged me over 250 quid calling them to sort my phone out...
What a nightmare, I eventually got a relative to bring out a mobile and a vodafone sim card, sorted and very cheap with vodafone passport. Another crappy thing about three is that although I had a decent pda phone, it wouldn't connect to my tomtom satnav. As things just got worse I had no choice to go back to vodafone....

The PDA not connecting to the portable satnav will have nothing to do with Three. That will be down to inter-operability issues between the PDA maker and TomTom.

Hi BernardC, Do you know Snowcrazy? He seems to know nearly everyone in Bourg. I'll check out the phone shops in town during half term. Thanks again
