Ive neatly wrapped my skis in bubble rap ready for next weekends holiday. However I was wondering what else (other then the skis and poles) if anything else is worth packing into the ski bag?

Check with your airline - some are now refusing to carry anything but the skis & poles in the ski bag.

hyweljenkins, do you know if this applies to Ryanair or Easyjet? I have always wrapped my skis and poles using items of clothing-- which seems a practical way to pack...could they possibly be so petty as to not allow that?

Renry, Julieanne, a couple of weeks ago we used sleazyjet and stuffed jackets etc in with skis as usual with no problem so will be doing the same this weekend

Julieanne, no. Scud travelly with Crystal about ten days ago and was quite clearly told to put "only the skis" in the bag. He thought that a bit odd and packed the poles anyway!

I normally wrap mine in a large towel and then spare clothing never had a problem before and think it gives a little protection ?

yup, i am in the clothing dept. Socks around the tips and ski trousers around the bindings. Bubble wrap (except in large volumes) will be next to useless for the kinds of impacts they will receive during airport handling.

I think the issue is a) saving baggage handlers' backs, and b) if they off load the skibags to a different flight (or not at all), you'll need your other gear for renting substitute skis.
There may be a c) Figuring out another way of achieving 1p flights by creating surcharges for bags, and fines for evasion by sneaking other luggage in ski bags.
I'm still amazed that 1p flights still end appearing on one's credit card as £140, but hey, at least the flight's dirt cheap, even if the optional luxury extras and taxes mount up.
They'll start charging excess for body weight soon. BMI over 1.1 sir? Oh dear, that's another £50. Kerching!

If you are only using bubble wrap, dry them well before packing as the edges will start to go rusty surprisingly quickly if left wet. (then one less job to do when you get home)

gsb, excellent point. They should rename bubble-wrap to rust-wrap.
Which means a key thing to pack with the skis is a desiccant or other suitable hydrophile.

Sooner they do that the better. WHy should I pay extra for a bag that's 5kg over, when Mrs NBT and I together wiegh less than the fat american three rows in front of us? Price based on total weight carried rather than just the bags

nbt, It's a bit unfair on Lanky Skinny Pierre who at 6ft 8 gets levered into a cramped seat while weighing more than fatty Johny shortarse at 5ft 2.

You know it makes sense.

That's why they should use BMI which would be fair. It measures obesity (unnecessary weight).
If anything, tall people should get a discount given insufficient legroom.

It's a cliche but:
Should I phone the hospital to put them on standby when you call the All Blacks obese?

What's fair about that? A fairer way would be to pay for what you use, not for what you use relative to your height, etc.

I love being sat next to skinny people on flights. Much more room for my immenseness. Also if there is a fire you can pick them up and use them as a heat shield.

Ok, Swirly, let's simply charge on body weight, but give a discount if your height exceeds your seat capacity, and apply a surcharge if you waste seat capacity (a child say), or impair another's seat capacity (fat).
After all, the fare directly relates to weight and the seat space.

I just lob mine in my skibag with a towel around the bindings. I don't put any ski clothing in at all because a) if hold baggage goes overweight then the first thing that the airlines will decide won't make the flight will be skis, and b) if they don't make the flight I'm on then it'll be a pain in the butt to have to fetch them at some other time, and c) I dno't want to be left without skiwear.
I've never had any ski gear damaged in transit yet (touch wood). I don't really know why I bother wrapping the bindings in a towel either - after all they're pretty tough to cope with the rigours of holding a 12stone person onto a pair of skis.

if your baggage doesn;'t arrive on your flight it should be delivered to your accomodation by the airline, it certainly was when my mate's bag stayed in london when we flew to vancouver

Mine came new wrapped in bits of foam camping may to protect the tips and tails, I still use the same bits now and add some clothes to pad out the bag.
