richmond, Guilty as charged!
My old philosophy lecturer maintained that freedom was not possible in the abstract. It had to be a specific freedom from something. I look forward to being free from the effects of other people's smoke in the workplace or in a pub.

And what about the Dutch coffee houses for consumption of waccy baccy ?
. |
Smoking ban was suppose to have taken effect a couple ofyear ago but the HORECA (Hotel Resturants Catering Trades) said it would cost 50000 jobs in the industry so the goverment back down & delayed until 2009 but by end of this year all establishments must have some form of plan for going non-smoking.
There was another argument as this law wil also affect Coffee shops meaning that they will all have to close down . Work arounds are trying to be made but there no hiding that the goverment wants them all shut through the backdoor as they do not like the attention & the image it give The Netherlands.

Me too, but I shall mourn the loss of other people's freedom to light up and kill themselves.

I think that we've agreed that there's a lot of it, probably too much, and it doesn't sound as if there'll be a ban anytime soon. Can you move us forward from here?

I think I'll put up with the smoke if they just make sure there is snow next time I go!

I would be perfectly happy if you had the Singapore 'Minister For Chewing Gum', provided the UK could have a Singapore 'Drug Czar'.

In Holland murderers dont spend that cuh time in Jail (unless phycos). Most are out within 6-8 yrs. It is believed to be more cost effective to treat & rehabilitate them . Goes the same for nearly all criminals. |
Execution is the most cost effective option for murderers. Used to be applied to other criminals as well.

And effective, too. Just look at USA.

richmond, Imagine the US without capital punishment though.
Where they go wrong is not executing enough and delaying executions for years or even decades. That is certainly a major waste of money.

THe MOD has had a smoking ban since 31Dec 06 in any building including pubs, clubs & naffi's on mainland Britain.
This is top bring England & Wales inline with Scotland.
The club I use is a lot better without the smoke and has gained more customers as the smoke use to drive a lot of people away.
I say bring it on.
I am off to Austria at the weeknd and this is the only thing I'm not looking forwards to (now it's snowing)

Do anyone know if the smoking ban in pubs etc has started in Austria? (If it's ever going to!) |
In short yes it has started but it's being somewhat ignored.
It has officially started although not in all countys. Bars / Restaurants in Vienna were supposed to at least make available a no smoking area. Many haven't so certain political figures etc are pushing for a total ban in bars/restaurants as is now the case in Italy but it will be a long time coming.
People still smoke in meetings without asking the non-smokers if it's OK. They don't realize that many other countries/cultures see this as rude.
I imagine that in the smaller towns / villages they just do what they like. There isn't the public support from non/smokers, it's more a European pressure.

Just did an internet search
90% of all bars / restaurants in Austria over 75 m2 should have a non-smoking area. In some establishments it's nothing more than two tables some where in a distant corner which aren't often used.
This about sums it up ...

I seem to recall that most if not all French cafes and restaurants should hae introduced no smoking areas aseveral years ago. Can't say I noticed. Stopping pupils from smoking in the playground would seem to be a reasonable first step toward discouraging smoking.

God i thought the Italians were bad for smoking, but the Austrians and Germans, say no more. It spolit my holiday last week in Ischgl plus i got a dam sore throat from the smelly stinking stuff! The hotel we were staying at too was bad, they were even smoking near the wellness centre! It sometimes drifted into the sauna.
Sticking with Italy from now on, even if it doesnt get as much snow.

I hope they ban smoking everywhere and ban the sale of cigarettes too. I might have a tiny chance of stopping then
