Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Arcs ~ piste info

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm after some info on a particular piste in Les Arcs. It's a black run which I think is called 'Combociere'? How difficult is this piste, is it very steep or moguls, or both??

I suppose what I'm asking is a dark red or a black black Skullie

Thanks all. snowHead

Mostly dark red, with one steeper section. Quite narrow, so often small to medium size moguls. Doesn't seem to hold snow that well (aspect perhaps?) so can get thin and icy. There are more enjoyable blacks imho: eg, Refuge (from Grand Col chair), dou de l'homme and my favourite (when snow is good) Rouelles.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks Rob. How would you grade these 3? Are they about the same level of difficulty?

Fairly similar, perhaps Rouelles is the least steep (maybe why it's my fav Wink) but not much in it. All three are very wide and can have big moguls on them.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Skied Comborciere a few weeks back when there was fresh snow on top of big icy moguls that you couldn't see - watched 3 people give up a walk the steep bit - mostly it is ok though

I think it is difficult, but then I think most runs are difficult. It is a norrow tree-lined gully and like most of these things not too bad when you get started. I guess a lot depends on what sort of snow is on it. You come past it on the way up to 2000 and it looks pretty impressive from there.

If I can do it anybody can do it!

I did it by mistake - on a snowboard! killed my legs, very steep, I'm just glad it had snowed the night before.

Just did that one at the end of the week and it was getting a little icy(ish). Very flat though so you could just bomb down it at high speed - also only saw two other skiers on it so no worries about hitting anyone.

Scooter,

As others have said, its depends on conditions: I have skied it when it has behaved as a kitten, and as a tiger. When the steep gully gets mogulled, you'd better have your concentrating head on...

Lifts back out are slow (either up to 2000 bowl or back over the top of the piste you've just come down, to 1600). A tip if you are going up to 2000/1950 and the queue is beyond the funnel markers: statistically you are on a better bet wandering over to the road and getting the free bus up the hill.
Buses run every 20 mins, and only take 5 or 6 to get up to 1950 so average case 15 mins. - the lift is a 15 min haul (almost exactly): add 15 mins queuing (its a 3 seat clunker) and that more than makes up for skis "on-off" faffing.

Still, the restaurants at the bottom in Pre St Esprit are worth making the effort to get down there...

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

I thought that in no way was this run a gully. It is a flat piste which is tree lined in a lot of places, but it's wide and in no way constricts your turns. Although... I did come onto it from the black above. Sooooo... have I missed out Puzzled Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Has it got a narrow entry that I didn't do???
