Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hope on the horizon

I'm off to Flaine and Saturday. I see the Chamonix weather forecast is, at last, offering some hope of change of weather. For Sunday next, it is forecasting that it will be "considerably colder" and has "snow showers". After rain/snow limits as high as 2000m, I take some heart from that word "considerably". But does anyone have access to longer term 10 day or 14 day forecasts?

check the Beginners guide to GFS forecasts sticky at the top of this forum for access to and explanations on longer forecasts.

I've checked those links. The difficulty I have is finding something that is more than 5 days out. The Ski Club site is quite good with 7 day forecasts but I'd like to get other sources. I can't find anything beyond 3 days on Meteo France for example.

Try again Stan Wink There is a ton of info in there and plenty of links for 2 weeks ahead of forecasts

The GFS links within that thread go out as far as the 29th Jan, eg this link for Engelberg

Hi StanBowles, as one who checks the weather like a madman but has very little understanding of the technical side of things rolling eyes I think the general mood for longer term forecasts is that they are pretty ropey! It's nice to look at the 10 day forecasts or the 7 days forecast on www.metcheck.com (for example) but I think they should be taken with a large pinch of salt as, weather being weather, it keeps on changin' Madeye-Smiley

StanBowles, pack your thermals !

Flaine is reasonably well placed to get some snow on Sunday (at the moment doesn't look like a mega-dump but it should help) followed by a week of cold and unsettled weather.

kitenski, MrDan. Cheers. Metcheck is handy. The GFS site is a bit beyond me - some German on my part would help! Anyway, not to worry. What will be will be. I've never had anything other than a fantastic time in the mountains. The basic outlook is colder from Sunday with a bit of snow on Sunday and Tuesday but not a lot, I think.

StanBowles, that's not the GFS site, this is the GFS site: http://wwwt.ncep.noaa.gov/ (it's American wink ). The site above is a German one that's very good at collating weather info from various sources around the world.
