Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Macugnaga - have you been

Just wondering if any of you have any reports of this place? It seems convenient for a weekend break plus flights to Milan Malpensa are cheapish.
We are not into apres, nor big ski areas, but prefer villagey type places...

This is where i stayed for my first three skiing holidays.

Really beautiful village with a very friendly atmosphere.

Theres hardly any apres ski (only one irish bar and a nightclub called Big Ben that was always empty)

The ski area is split into sections. One at the top of the two villages. (That make up Macugnaga) This area is the more gentle where all the ski schools spend the first few days. The second second is at the top of two cable car rides. This is a more challenging area and its all above the tree line. Last i heard (about two years ago) was that the company who owned the cable cars had gone bust and as a result they were not running. Not sure if this has been rectified.

All in all, great place especially for beginners, no queues, but as there is only a maximum of 40kms of piste you would get bored if you were a competant skier.

We stayed at the Hotel Cristallo. Family run hotel who couldnt do enough for us. Totally recommended!

Any other questions, just ask.

My first year skiing was in Macugna as well - almost thirty five years ago!

I was on a walking holiday in Saas Fe last August which is over the border on the Swiss side and one day I walked up to the pass from Saas Fe then took the cable cars down into Macugna for a bit of nostalgia. It was the first time I had ever been back. I can confirm therefore that the two cable cars down to the village are working and they were also running the first of the two chairs at the top end of the village in the summer.

I agree with the previous poster's comments and if you are at the upper end of the intermediate level you might find it limited even for a weekend.

Great scenery as well as it sits below the Monte Rosa.

thank you both for your feedback - it's really helpful. Me and my boyfriend are both very much at the lower end of the intermediate scale, don't really 'do' apres ski, and like pretty villages. So ,I think actually it sounds like it might suit us! I might even book something now to provide myself with a bit of cheer on a gloomy London day!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The most beautiful resort I've ever visited.

Limited in area, but for beginners or early intermediates, not interested in apres ski it's ideal.

You'll love it!

Nosnow, rich or ssnowman,

have any of you driven to Macugnaga from Milano Malpensa airport? Is it an OK drive? I'm not very experienced at driving on snowy roads. How scary is the road up the valley to Macugnaga?

it very nice and pituresque. went a few years ago.
the is very, very limited and just for beginner.
when we went there was not that much snow so all there was 2 slopes and one that was like slush by the end of the day.
as the runs down to the resort were closed. there is an area also called belvedere which can be reached by a bus but not too far a walk.
stayed at the hotel signal wasnt tyo bad pretty average, they dont have toast and if you look forward to having a dog poo right infornt of your door at the end of the day!! but all in all okay
macugnaga was probably oone of the most pretty resorts i have too and have the nicest people. they also give you the best prizes for winning your race in ski school. a mini trophy!!!
i would definetly not go there however if you are any more than learning to ski or this is say your second holiday.

robertsnerys, I've driven to Cervinia & Gressoney la Trinite from Milan. When I went to Macunaga, I was on a package.

The drive from Milan to Valle d'Aosta is very easy, on fast roads and the mountain roads aren't very difficult either, they're usually kept clear of snow.
