Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Length and recommendations for Skis

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all,

i'm looking to buy some ski's for my girlfriend. She's an intermediate skier, about 5 foot 8" tall and weighs around 70kg. She's always hired skis but i'm going to have a browse on ebay. I've got my own skis that i'll be taking and have a double ski bag so its no extra cost or effort to take hers with us too.

Any recommendations? She's never going to be a hard core black run or off pister, but enjoys cruising fast blues and easy reds.

lower,

Not really the one to ask, but check out any K2's and then post back here to see what's what. Anything with Luv in it is a good start for a women's ski, IMO

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

There's a set on K2 one luv on ebay at the moment, length 153. Would these be suitable? The seller is acutally in my town so this could be fate.

lower,

Sounds a bit short but I am not sure what 5 ft 8 pans out to, about 173 or so, therefore that would be about chin-height Check out the Ski reviews under the Snowbase drop down menu by the piccie atop this page. If she likes short skis, then maybe. Some of the girls on here might know better.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Didn't know that was there! thanks for that.

Yep, she's about 170cm tall. TBH, she won't know if she likes short skis or not because she hasn't been at a good enough level when she's had different skis. She does like skis that are easy to turn, but fairly nippy too. I wonder if the One Luv's might be a bit too much for her as they are described as for intermediates- expert. Maybe i'm knocking her ability, but i'd put her firmly in the intermidiate category so wonder if these might not be suitable.

Any other comments on skis that people would recommend in addition to the k2's and comments about length would be appreciated.

lower,

I've got them at intermediate-advanced and good edge hold and the 153 will be turney, so if the price is right, might be worth a punt.

The graphics in the Ski review is this years model, I think

Having talked jsut spoken with her she thinks that she's used 163's in the past. Would that mean that 153's would be too small?

The price is pretty good at the moment, but then it is ebay........

lower,

A confident skier would want around 163 and my general thinking would be that as well. You are getting into everyones compromise here, short and turney but can be overpowered if the skier is agressive, or longer and more stable but trickier on the turn by comparison.
My feeling - and of course, I don't know how skis skis - is that 163-ish would be better. Can you get the same type of ski at MK to demo... ?

Hopefully some girls will be along with a point of view, soon

Next ones up are 160 not 163. I know because I want some 160s too!

lower, I'm 5'10" and just under 70kgs - I ski K2 One Luv's 160cm. The next size up is 167cm, which I found too long - but then I prefer control over speed. I'm a lower intermediate standard and the One Luv's are perfect for me...

Thanks for that nuttyprofessor. I think 160's are going to be about right.

I'm not quite 5 4 weigh less and I ski on 153- I would say they may be a little short for her

Hi lower - I would also advise that your girlfriend buy the skis in resort so she can try before she buys. I tried loads of different types of skis and I'm glad I did because I found quite a few skis which I hated (in particular those with fat tips Puzzled ) I would've made an expensive mistake if I hadn't tried out the skis first. If you want to buy the skis in the UK, try and buy a pair that she has already rented and skiied well on. There are so many different types of skis these days and they vary so much from manufacturer to manufacturer - there are more parameters than just length...

Anyway, good luck!
