Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Kaprun / Zell am see snow report (just got back)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I am really sorry to report that conditions in Zell and the lower ski areas of Kaprun are in very bad shape. The weeks warm weather has taken its toll and every run has grass visable, some pistes are down right dangerous! The glacier has great conditions thanks to heavy snowfall yesterday. When i left today the weather was slightly cooler but still unseasonably warm. I feel very lucky to have got some good skiing early in the week and really enjoyed the ski area, if i was arriving today I wouldn't be so happy. The snow below 2000m is either sheet blue ice or slush, not much fun...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.......

Oh, also heard a guy on the plane saying Saalbach was pretty much the same Sad

Lossy...

Agreed. Conditions right now in Saalbach-Hinterglemm are poor. The worst for up to a decade, perhaps decades. Ice, grass and mud everywhere. Half the runs are shut. They urgently need a couple feet of freshies. The forecast is not showing any improvement for the next week, unfortunately.

Whitegold, Without wanting to question you, what are your data points on Saalbach? The snow depths are anything but deep, but the SCUK report (from yesterday) says "good skiing on well groomed pistes" and the official website has been showing all lifts open (bar some small t-bars), and about 80% of pistes open. I'll be there tomorrow to see if my optimism has any susbtance!!

I am on the ground in Saalbach. Have been here and elsewhere for a week. Counting the red lights on the piste boards is not fun. There are lots of them. Plenty of lifts open, but they are all feeding the same limited slopes. They have had the snowguns blasting up top for the last 2 days, but it has had only modest impact so far.

Whitegold, ho-hum .. if you're on the ground there, then perhaps my optimism was mis-placed. Maybe I'll bump into you on the mud-pistes somewhere!

Kamikaze -- I leave Sun evening. I will keep an eye open tomorrow for a Snowheads hat in between the slush and grass Cool

Easiski -- I agree. I have had a great week's skiing. Dodgy conditions can sharpen technique. Just passing on information that parts of Austria (like other countries) are somewhat ropey at this time. For example, someone with their own skis might want to consider hiring for a day or two if things don't whiten up soon. They may want to pack a brolly, some wellyboots and a packet of Daz, too Sad

I'm hoping that there's a bit of snowfall before my trip to the Ski Amade, which will be from 17-19 February. I'll have some flexibility to make it to other areas, as well, but Ski Amade will be most convenient to where I'm staying.

Of course, the winter here in the eastern U.S. has been poor, as well, and quite a few areas have called it quits (or at least scaled back their plans many fold) for the 2006-2007 season.

I just returned from Utah, where they have decent, if not spectacular, snow right now (click on my blog link to see my report and link to my pics from the trip), and I hope that it's not my only ski outing this season.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I have just been on the Kaprun official site and I cannot believe what I read! Depths of over half a meter on the lower slopes? Absolute rubbish, there are no slopes with more than 10cm on them below the glacier. All low slopes have a barely skiable surface. I love the Austrians, but it appears they can tell a few porky pies.....

Lossy.
