Ensure the security of your own ski's etc when staying in hotel's without ski-lockers and only a 'boot room' facility especially when they insist no ski's in rooms?
I am very interested as i have been lucky in the hotel choices that they have had individual ski lockers (or I was hiring ski's and didn't care for the loss too deeply) but will be staying in a hotel in March that doesn't appear to have any secure store.
advice is much appreciated.

Provided the ski room itself is secure and locked they should be OK. Sometimes we lock ours up as well using one of those retractable locks, especially if there is a metal rack or somesuch.

stankane, You can lock you skis with a specialist ski or snowboard lock.

I have a retractable lock that I use both on the slope (ie at lunchtime) and at any other time when I think my skis may be at risk.

Yes, I have seen those locks and agree they would be great for locking your ski's up whilst sitting in the 'beer garden' or a mountain restaurant but, what about at 3a.m when the ski/boot room is almost certainly empty and the vagrant has a handy pair of wire cutters?
Does anyone insist on taking their ski's etc to their rooms?
Is it unreasonable for me to request that my belongings be placed in the hotel safe (obviously that aint gonna happen but it may allow me to take them to my room)?
Or do you just think I am worrying about this a little too much?

AxsMan, I have one similar to that, bought on ebay for £0.01 + £2.49 postage. Bargain, and should deter all but the determined.

stankane, the ski/boot room should only be accessible to residents of the hotel, either by key or code. I doubt the skis'd fit in the hotel safe
You're worrying too much. Take a lock, lock your skis up in the ski room and put your valuables in the hotel safe.
If it all goes horribly wrong they should be covered under your insurance as they were left in a secure locked location.

Ray Zorro, Mine was about a tenner (I think) bought in resort. Works fine and gives a little peace of mind.
stankane, If someone is really determined they'll have your skis, but that's what insurance is for. 'Casual' thieves should be deterred by a cable, they'll just nick someone elses

Ski/cable/lock thingy ordered.
nice!
This actually makes me interested to find out how many of you guys have had their ski's stolen and what you did to avoid ruining the rest of your holiday.
Have you ever had you ski's stolen (from where - hotel or slope etc) and how quickly were you back on the slope?

stankane, Never had skis nicked. Lufthansa lost my boots for a day, but got a hire pair FOC in the meantime. (b*ggered up my toes though!). Some folks we met in Val D had just had both their pairs nicked from outside a bar in the village. They were hiring replacements and were none too chuffed at the time. That was when I bought the cable lock.

Do people actually steal skis from cafe ski racks on the side of the slopes?!?!?!?!
I've never heard of this yet although they can probably tell they're rental skis !

GordonFreeman, I was told (by the ski rental shop) that it is more prevalent in some resorts than others, and much more likely to happen down at the resort rather than from a slopeside bar up the hill. Apparently Val D has a bit of a reputation for it

GordonFreeman, yes, it does happen, in France at any rate. Splitting up pairs of skis is not a bad strategy, IMO.
The 4* hotel I just stayed in at Zermatt had no security in the boot/ski room as far as I could tell. I guess they'd never had a problem, or there would have been.

That thread brings up an interesting point though.
Most of those locks are dirt cheap and could be cut through with some decent plyers.
Also, the fact that locking them up in the first place screams "look at these skis that are worth nicking cos I've locked them up with this shitty 1mm thick cable".
Is it only in France and Andorra where the main problems are?
I'm going to Austria...

Tea Leaf, Have you any ski's for sale this season so far?

GordonFreeman, a lock is just a deterrent and complying with insurance requirements. Don't worry about it, they won't get nicked. Or you could just check out where Tea Leaf's off skiing this year

Richmond - I know that travel insurance may well cover the cost but it is the hassle of it all that I can't be bothered with. These call centre muppets that really don't care and actually get a buzz out of trying their damnedest to void your claim that you end up feeling like you are begging them to believe you.
Since I bought my own ski's my skiing has vastly improved (now linking snow plough turns on blue runs). The rental's are just well used - I even paid for 'superior' rentals on one occassion (don't know what that meant but I would have hated to have paid for 'inferior' ski's after seeing what the superior ones were like).
damn it... i ain't takin them off!!!!

Guys,
I am really not that stressed, I just find it bizzaar that 'ski hotels' do not provide these secure facilities (or well some don't).
I was in El Tarter, Andorra, last year, Hotel Nordic, and they had an excellent ski locker room, a bit narrow and could be tricky to negotiate round dressing compadres, but they were electronic card secured lockers which had 4 shelves and plenty room to put 4 sets of ski's boots etc in.

I've never had a problem with boot stores etc, but in Verbier last year it was a PITA lugging skis back up the path to the chalet. My saviour?! The resort ski locker facility under the main gondola! It was a couple of CHF each day but was big enough for 2xboots/poles/skis (we still fitted the ski locks though). We were able to wander down in trainers and in the evening were ready for apres without having to go back up the hill! - Perhaps this may be an option - where are you off to?

I went skiing a few years ago to Norway, with some Norwegians. I had one of the retractable locks and diligently locked my skis up every time I was going to be out of sight from them. The guys I was holidaying with ripped the p*ss out of my all the time for this, because they couldn’t believe that people would be stealing skis – especially not in their ‘safe’ homeland. You can guess what’s coming – that’s right, two of the them had their skis stolen whilst we were having lunch one day. I never leave my skis unlocked – ever.

OK folks where do you stand if hire gear gets nicked, and is there any way of securing boots in a locker room (wouldn't want to lose my nice shiny boots if I go for them!!) - I stay in one of those appartments where you kit up in the basement and walk onto the slope. Does ski insurance pay up if the gear has not been locked up properly?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Megamum, I imagine that it will depend on the T&C of your particular insurance policy. Boots can be taken up to your room pretty easily, and they'll probably be a bit warmer there than in the basement, unless it's kitted out as a boot room. I wouldn't leave my nice comfy, fitted, boots lying around to get nicked, but skis are a different matter; what's the point in paying for insurance if you worry yourself into an early grave about them being nicked? Worst case scenario; an hour or two hiring them and a nice wrangle with the insurance company when you get home. Not the end of the world.
|
|
|
|
|
|
I suspect boots are safer than skis, because they're so much less interchangeable.
