Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Vail charges $85 for a lift ticket, Aspen only $82

VAIL, Colo., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Two major ski resorts in Colorado are trying to get extra business prestige by making their ski lift tickets the most costly in the nation.

The Denver Post reported that within days of the Aspen Skiing Co. raising the price of its ski lift ticket to a U.S. high of $82, its key rival in the neighboring Colorado city of Vail topped it with a whopping $85 cost.

But in the US nobody in their right mind actually pays the 'list prices' for passes as you can buy heavily discounted tickets in the local shops. etc

Absolutely. We have paid £580 for two adults and two kids passes for Jackson Hole for 11 days in February... If you assume Kids passes should cost half adult rates this works out at £17.60 a day each, or about $37.

You can buy a lift ticket for 7 days for Vail during that time period for 60 bucks a day, and I suspect you will get it cheaper elsewhere...

Yes but what is the point of their pricing policy. I bet it scares away loads of folks who just look on the net or in brochures. Barmy.

Frosty the Snowman, Aspen likes to talk up it's reputation as the ski resort of the stars (can't say I noticed when I was there). Ludicrous headline lift prices reinforce that 'attraction'. It makes its money from US visitors, I imagine, who are all presumably well aware that they needn't pay more than half that, and anyway there are probably plenty of people who don't care whether a pass costs $85, $45 or $185 if they can say that they skied in these places.

Not sure what Vail's angle is. It is resolutely middle market (and hideous) so far as off snow image is concerned. It has no charm, unlike Aspen, and one would only choose to ski there for the skiing, (which struck me as pretty damn good). Maybe it can get away with it because of the quality of the skiing.

ewat25, not for everyone. I'm not especially bothered by the appearance of a resort, but I'd be reluctant to stay in Vail as it's so ghastly to look at and be in.

It's not cheap but sure sounds worth doing Aspen. Apologies if we're posting wrongly. We're looking to go 6 Jan for a week. Only looking for a standard/cheap lodge or similar in an ok location - don't mind a walk downtown. It costs a fortune to come from Scotland.. is there any way to cut costs a bit by using a special booking agent or calling direct. Any tips or places worth a try will be very welcome.
Thanks, Paul and Margaret

paulmags, welcome to snowHead

If you are going to the US for a trip, I'd suggest you call Ski Independence - who are based in Edinburgh.

If you are doing it yourself, and want to go to Aspen, try the Pokoldi Inn (I apologise if that is mis-spelled). It's reasonably priced for the area.

Many thanks for that. Following your tip we did use Ski Independence who were pretty helpful with accommodation, transfer from Denver (arghhh) and a hotel in Denver on our way back. We stayed in Aspen Mountain Lodge which was just a perfect spot and lodge. Overall wasn't cheap however worth every penny. A great resort with fantastic skiing.
