Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nikwax TX Direct Wash In - Can it be used as a spray on

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
This sounds like a silly question, but I thought I'd ask anyway...here goes Very Happy

I have a large bottle of "Nikwax TX Direct Wash In" which is unlikely to get used as my unlined hard-shell has "popped its clogs". However, I do have padded outdoor/ski jackets which I wash with "Tech-Wash" and treat with "TX-Direct Spray On".

Does anyone know if "Nikwax TX Direct Wash In" and "TX-Direct Spray On" are the same product? They both look and smell the same Toofy Grin

If they are, there shouldn't be any problem filling the spray bottle with the wash-in product and using like the "TX-Direct Spray On".

Any advice or slagging off appreciated!

Rik

Have Nikwax got a tech info e-mail address? If so I'd drop them a line.

I'd be surprised if anyone else has actually tried this little experiment!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Maybe I should try it out on SWMBO's waterproof jacket and see if it works Twisted Evil

Tried out my experiment on my 5 year old daughter old snow-suit, except that once it was dry I gave it a quick warm water rinse and spin. Seems to have worked without any problems.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Rikochet, did you ever try using the wash-in prodcut as a spray ?
I'd love to know as i am thinking of trying this with a North Face 'Hyvent' jacket i have.

Grangers do an all in 1 now too. That brought my school run berghaus goretex and won't die TNF Mountain jacket back to life. I don't have a tumble drier, but the low temp ironing did work for it. Use to use Nikwax on Columbia Bergunthal cloth. Gizmo/Bugaboo jacket and Bugabib salopettes. Worked good on them.

wash in is wash in and works far better than spray on in most cases, the chemical make up of the spray on is different to enable it to go directly onto the fabric where the wash in works when dilutted in the washing water
as johnDUB said ironing [or the tumble dryer] is the key to making these products work...the heat activates the DWR finish of the face fabric of the garment the hydrocarbons in the proofer bond to the fibres of the fabric, but they do not stick fully until heated

the grangers product if applied correctly will bring most garments back to their original waterproofness / breathability

CEM, I didn't know about the tumble drier - that might be why I've been rather unimpressed with the performance of these products - will the tumble drier still help if its been a while since their application?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Megamum, it is probably too late, if the chemical doen't bond fully you can pretty much shake the garment when it is dry and the molecules fall off, best to go straight form the washer to the dryer
